So, for years superhero movies have been more in the business of “taking inspiration” from comic books instead of outright adapting them. And for the most part, I’ve enjoyed that approach, it’s led to some of my favorite movies ever made. But I can’t say I haven’t been tempted at the thought of a “direct adaptation” for some of my favorite comics.

But with James Gunn’s DCU growing more and more, and “Supergirl” being an adaptation of the “Woman of Tomorrow” miniseries from 2021, it got me thinking.

DC Comics has so many amazing stories, but specifically a lot of miniseries and graphic novels. Things that are completely standalone and could work perfectly in a movie format. Compared to the more traditional ongoing comics that are more fit for TV or animation.

And because the DCU right now is focusing more on “standalone” movies for now, I think there’s a real opportunity to mix in some more of those “direct adaptations” like Supergirl alongside other projects. To expand the world with individual characters and to put a spotlight on their stories for new readers.

So these are some comics that I think should get adapted in James Gunn's DCU.

I think a perfect Zatanna movie would look and feel like Scott Pilgrim vs. The World. That movie plays with scene transitions, cinematography, and editing the same way Zatanna plays with comic book paneling, so it'd be a perfect way to adapt her.

@shelfenthusiast 4 months ago

if the DCU wants to do more genre films like Clayface, i would love to see a Zatanna film in the style of a old Hollywood musical

I’m so happy you said that about Wonder Woman, a bit misunderstanding is that her defining characteristic is “warrior” but it’s the opposite, her defining trait is “peacemaker” she is someone who avoids unnecessary violence, she helps anyone, whether they take her hand or refuse it. She’s a beacon of compassion

I think we should make a movie inspired by something that’s never been done like the long Halloween or Batman year one.

16:02 you thought he wouldn’t mention Green Arrow in a video? Fools

@EpicRandomness555 4 months ago

What’s fun to note is, as James Gunn has said, all it is going to take for a movie to be made for the DCU is for the script to be finished and presented. It’s why Clayface is coming out right now. And we’re just waiting for a Wonder Woman script to be finished so we can get our new Diana.
So absolutely many of these ideas could definitely get made eventually here soon.

a horror aquaman movie might be the perfect rebooted aquaman franchise, it’s different enough from the dceu movie and a really cool concept

I really need to see more Wonder Woman’s villains on the big screen I swear they’re soo compelling and I need more people to realize that instead of just making her fight Superman and Batman’s rogues in team up.
Especially Cheetah, she often gets beated by other heroes with the same ease as simple henchmen when she should be a foe who is able to go against toe to toe with Wonder Woman.
Like are you seriously trying to tell me Catwoman a friggin normal human just bested her with martial arts? Not to talk about how much her intelligence get’s discarded in favor of making her a “rhino” type character. Even the Wonder Woman movie with her as one of the main villain just ignored her entire personality and gave her basically Silver Swan back story.

I love the era or DC where they just made animated movies inspired by famous comic runs, Like Batman: Hush, the death of superman, Flashpoint, where someone could just grab a DVD and just watch it with little to no knowledge of the characters or story and still enjoy it fully

I unironically think that a Gotham Academy TV show, ideally animated, would be a really fun way to adapt it. I feel like Maps and Olive lend themselves so well that to that style and it'd just be really fun and nerdy

Honestly, I want an Invincible style, basically one to one animated adaptation of the new Ultimate universe. Imagine the show bouncing around between the different titles, actually getting time to tell the ending in a satisfying way.

20:08 I love this section about where to start reading comics, because you’re right. You CAN start wherever you want, and pick what you think would be the best or most proper starting point. That is the magic of it!

21:31 they should have more stories with wonder woman and the olympians, I saw a clip of the comic where Diana's mother is accused of killing Ares, and we found out that Zeus did it because Ares got "too soft". Of course Ares can get ressurected, but that doesn't mean that he can't use Ares to punish Diana's mother. She asks batman for help and the conversation the two have is really touching.

i'm glad dc isn't going to shy away from doing elseworlds projects, it makes the possibility of adaptations of books like these much more sensible and exciting since any idea that's too weird for canon can just get that label slapped on instead of getting neglected entirely

@FullmetalPrimus 4 months ago

Not a mini but man would I kill for a Morrison Animal Man adaption that serves as a commentary on superhero adaptions themselves.

@BenRigney480 4 months ago (edited)

Superman: Up in the Sky would be a perfect Superman standalone sequel. You introduced me to the book, Troyo, so thank you!

I just know I'm gonna get some sick comic recommendations with this one. Much appreciated as always.

14:02 Learned a lot from this vid. Surprising to find out Golden Age Shazam was more of his own person, rather than Billy in an adult body. Alan Moore of course would go on to exquisitely deconstruct the Shazam concept with Miracleman, so seeing that the Golden Age version potentially got a reconstruction in Shazam: The Monster Society of Evil is pretty cool!

I swear if they made a gritty and introspective old west show about any of Jonah Hex’s comic runs I think that would be so good, hell I’ll even take the dystopian future era, he’s the only comic character I know that hates himself more than his villains
