1:49 it took me 10 days to realize I literally misspelled Phoenix before the 2 minute mark, for a channel about comic books I might just be illiterate.

“Jean Grey could have lived to become a god. But it was more important to her that she die a human”

Something I liked when I read Dark Phoenix is that they don't try to shy away from the fact Jean actually did evil shit as the Phoenix. They don't brush it off as an evil entity possessing her, it is genuinely treated with the proper weight. The aftermath where the X-Men all have their opinions on whether or not they have an obligation to stand up for her as her friends and family, or to let her face justice because they know she killed a lot of people and the X-Men shouldn't get in the way of that because one of them is responsible. It has a lot of good moments where it shows you a lot of each character's thought processes, each X-Man has a different stance on it

i think what makes the dark phoenix saga sooo unadaptable is how these big movie studios refuse to give us any idea of jean, so many stories start OFF with phoenix already being dark and evil that we dont get the time to care for what was lost. all we get are memories from other characters that want you to care but its never enough to make us actually care

2:29 the problem is outside of the animated series, they forget that there’s a Phoenix saga and Dark Phoenix saga

you absolutely can adapt the dark pheonix but what people dont realize is you need ALL of the phoenix saga, the year that she was alone and they were on the savage lands, and then the dark pheonix saga. DOZENS of chapters to create one compelling story.

Thr films struggled with adapting the Dark Phoenix because they were way too focused on other characters and then they want to suddenly adapt the Dark Phoenix saga without any set up.

Jean and Scott need to be the main characters of the X-Men from the beginning. You cannot tell the story of the Dark Phoenix saga without laying down years of groundwork with Jean and Scott first. She has to be a hero for us to fell the fall of her becoming a villain.

They also need to adapt the Phoenix saga before the Dark Phoenix saga so we know what she's capable of and we can properly feel sadness and fear when that power is turned against us.

Just do those two things well and you can easily adapt the Dark Phoenix saga.

The problem is that a movie studio always tries to adapt the Dark Phoenix Saga, without realizing the Dark Phoenix is merely the conclusion of the overall Phoenix Saga, which in the books went like 3 years of issues between Jean emerging from the waters as Phoenix, to her killing herself on the moon, so a ton of stuff happened there, and that's material for, like, 3/4 movies worth of plot.

I feel like X-Men the Animated Series did the Dark Phoenix Saga a lot better than the movies.

I think the X-Men generally are gonna be really hard to adapt I mean there's just so much lore with these characters as individuals to the point I genuinely think either u need more then 3 movies to adapt them or u just need a straight up tv show.

The only medium to actually succeed in adapting the Dark Phoenix saga is animation. The 90s X-Men cartoon adapted the story well. And let be honest the 90s cartoon put all the live actions X-Men films to shame.
X-Men work better in animation than in live action.

The biggest problem with the first run of x-movies, dark phoenix included, was they were really wolverine and friends movies.  The second run tried to get it, but missed the mark.   Dark Phoenix was a long process in the comics. It can't just be dropped into a two hour movie and be any good.   They'd do better to stick with the source material instead of trying to play fan service and adapting it.   We need the hellfire club and magneto was the catalyst that separated Jean from the X-Men to allow Mastermind the opportunity to hijack her subconscious, and it would help if we had the real team, not just handpicked mutants outside the continuity...no quicksilver, no mystique...

It is far from unadaptable.  It merely takes set-up, rather than jumping into it five minutes after introducing the characters, for 30 seconds each.  If they treated the x-men like they treated the MCU, with Dark Phoenix being the "Endgame", it would hit hard (and i dare say make even more money).

The Dark Phoenix Saga could definitely be adapted as a streaming series not a movie. The powers that be at Marvel want to cram the saga into a movie and that will never work. There needs to be time to show Jean's gradual progression from Marvel Girl to Phoenix to Dark Phoenix. I see it as a three season series with the last season being the final transformation. Since there are multiverses in the MCU, this could be a stand alone project set in the 1980s, the same time frame as the comic book issues.

There was no build up of any kind in the two live-action movies, the direction was go straight up when the Phoenix possessed Jean. Cyclops was removed in the third movie so that Wolverine can replace him while there was no chemistry between Tye Sheridan and Sophie Turner.

X-Men the animated series got it right, they had more time to tell the story also establishing Jean Grey as Phoenix first rather than going straight to Dark Phoenix.

Sometimes art catches lightning in a bottle.  The Dark Pheonix saga in the comics seems to be such a thing, no adaptation comes close.  Few things can make me cry.  It takes a real artist to do that.   Her death in the comics did.  It's hard to imagine a movie pulling it off.

John Byrne’s art still takes my breath away.

I feel like the Dark Phoenix saga is unadaptable for the same reason the Spider-Man symbiote saga is. Both stories cannot simply be told in one movie or game and be done with. They are overarching storylines that take multiple years to fully tell and flesh out properly. Dark Phoenix and the symbiote are to X-Men and Spider-Man what the Infinity saga was to the MCU.

The only way I can see a decent version of it happening is if they take their time and then maybe a Phoenix trilogy.
