It’s amazing how many five tube wonders were created back then where the design’s differed from set to set and yet,the same five tube line up. When I was young and not helping with the tv roof antenna, I’d be collecting those plastic wonders. Nicotine held most of those radios together which was a good thing back then as I only knew about Elmers school glue which wasn’t very effective on plastic infused with nicotine. The radios I mostly got were from a new next door neighbor. It seemed the old neighbors never threw out any of their electronics since dirt was invented. Eventually I got my dirty hands on those dusty, sticky buzzy old relics and learned what’s what with some good electrocutions along the way. Some radios advertised they were special to the others because of some different antenna or being duel speaker or once in a while you’d get a long distance six tubber with a three gang tuning capacitor. I was a five tube nerdy hunky and I was hooked! I went through radio sets like a chocolate cake sitting in front of a Jenny Craig weight loss convention! I loved that dusty burn your house down smell they had just like the family TV set back then as you knew the tv was on just walking into the living room and smelling that heated cardboard- wood cabinet smell from all the tubes. At one point I had quite a collection of those plastic cased five tube wonders in my now long gone collection. Again, thanks for sharing your electronics repair videos with us I wish I had your job repairing radios for a museum and hope you get paid well as you and obviously are trained and smart with the subject. My career went in a different direction. Enough of my blabbing for now!
Philco model J842 code 124. Came in several color combinations. Very atomic age looking cabinet. Not surpised that the PC board was put in at an angle ,RCA had some like that too! Saved money on parts to use a tuner dial cord setup. I have been reduced to using gloves when spraying paint using those wider spray caps on cans cause they shoot the paint out in a cone shape spray. The wider spray tip gums up too easily! I go to a hobby shop to get a better paint although the cans are smaller . With three E caps you have to add a wire to make a continuous ground to reproduce the can caps outer edge connections. Love the final outcome Seth. Unusual looking radio is a keeper IMHO.
In 2007 we were looking at a property outside of Giddings Texas in the middle of nowhere and on it was this cabin that hadn't been stepped in for 25 years full of great old stuff and on the floor was a big 19" late 60's Zenith tube television and I plugged it in and turned it on,, it was tuned into the local Austin station channel 7 and in about 45 seconds it came on with a full tuned in picture that was perfect ,,, no one could friggin believe it,,, lol..
I have that same solder sucker I use it and solder wick most of the time. The solder suckers do need to be cleaned out after every couple of uses. Looks like one of the early attempts of a printed circuit. Well you got it working. Thanks for sharing.
The radio sounds good, but that's a face only a mother could love! I can't imagine lots of people looking at this radio and thinking, "That'd look really good in the den!"
This is well worth getting a new lease on life. It’s probably tube type, if lucky 🍀. Yes 👍, I heard ya on that part. Great 👍 living room radio 📻. Your friend, Jeff.
Lot's of those radios got tossed because the IF cans failed. They'd play for a while and then break into loud static, due to silver mica disease in the cheap capacitors molded into the bottom of the can. I worked as an apprentice tech in a tv repair shop in the mid 1960's. Already, these radios were suffering IF can failures. There was a company called Workman that supplied replacements. You could use them in almost any radio. But it got to the point where it cost as much to repair the radio as the radio was worth. So people just went out and got another one.
Great video Seth..So informative and interesting. You sure can fix those things..! We call that troublesome paint finish over here as 'orange peeling' I find successive coats will fix it, but it takes nearly a full can of paint to do a small item. Also direct sunlight can be an issue..Top job as usual..Ed..uk..😁
Paint does the same dulling for me too. I have to use 3000 grit wet polishing pad with a little soapy water then 5000 grit wet soap polish, rinse then a dry towel to shine it
GRRRRRRRRRRR!!!!! that unpainted inner edge thats just full of overspray is driving me nuts! XD LOLOLOL always gotta watch for that when painting case halves..... many times the edge and or a little bit of the inner edge is visible when radio is put together.

Here is a typical American 5 tube set from 1960. It had issues, mostly cosmetic, but it all came out ok in the end
