Parts That Changed History

In the early 1960s, an RCA engineering group led by Herb Meisel turned an Army transistor into the 2N3055, the first multi-amp silicon power transistor to sell for less than one dollar. Almost sixty years later, you can still buy a brand new one.

This is the story of the most famous power transistor ever made: germanium's heat problem, RCA's hometaxial process, the hobbyist power supply in a 1967 issue of RCA Ham Tips, the Eastern Bloc copies, the 1970s redesign, and the fakes flooding online marketplaces today.

Watch the MOSFET story, the transistor that took over the job the 2N3055 couldn't do: Is This The Most Manufactured Thing In Hum...

Did you ever build something with a 2N3055? Tell me in the comments. And if I got a date, a number or a name wrong, tell me there too. I read every comment and I pin corrections.
