really like what the adaptation does to Lydia's character. instead of seeing ghosts just because she's weird and gothy, she sees them because she's searching desperately for hints of life after death. instead of being at odds with Charles and Delia because they're normies, they're split over ways of handling or not handling tragedy and grief. really gives a solid emotional core to the musical, taking a bunch of weird morbid stuff that happens and weaving it into a show about death

Alex Brightman has a fold in his vocal chords that most people don't have apparently, which is how he is able to sing in that voice.

what I love about Lydia saying dead mom in the beginning is that it establishes her position as an angsty weird teenager, and then later you get the context that she is calling her that to try and get her dad to correct her and say her name

....yeah If I Knew and Home are going to Break him based off what im seeing with Dead Mom

Edit: i love this musical. Brings me to tears and i really hope theres a proshot one day

Musical Beetlejuice is Chaotic Neutral, Cartoon Beetlejuice is Chaotic Good-ish, Movie Beetlejuice is Chaotic Evil.

Justin Collette’s portrayal of Beetlejuice has my favorite version of the “Puppet Show”. Instead of just “Tell my story”, he added in “I thought this only happened to books that turned kids gay!” which made me double over from laughing

Sophia Anne Caruso is awesome and that signature scowl is iconic. She's also the final protegé of David Bowie: at 15 she played the ghost girl in his musical Lazarus, my favorite show of all time. I went to a Bowie tribute show earlier this year, where she sang "Changes," "Lady Grinning Soul," "Ashes to Ashes" and "Rock 'n' Roll S∪icide" – it was nothing short of a religious experience.

Maybe it’s because I grew up with the whole Millennial “It’s gonna be me(May)” thing, but my brain didn’t see anything wrong about rhyming “easy” with “me(may)”, at least until you pointed it out. It’s like my brain auto-adjusted the words.

3:29 At the touring show I saw, there was no hole in the stage, so they added in some lines and made some tweaks so the Maitlands died from a faulty electrical wire.  So, they were lying there on stage during BJ's whole monologue.  When the book fell, it bounced and hit Barbara's foot, who reflexively twitched, which got a reaction from the crowd.  So BJ looked confused, took a beat, went up, checked her face, and was like "Naahhh, she's dead" before continuing on

I have been waiting for the "Dead Mom" song reaction since I first heard it myself cause it is so good (also the animation in the thumbnail is also absolutely incredible highly recommend 10/10)

Also the final lyrics where she says
"A plague of mice, a lightening strike or drop a nuclear bomb" all of those are things that could take her to her mom or let her be with her mom again.

Yeah just wanted to point that out cause it's pretty sad and pretty deep lyrics not gonna say more so to not spoil anyone about some future songs in the musical by accident

The rant towards hateful commenters, every "TELL ME WHY!!!?"
My brain, sick from seasonal change: "heheh... Ain't nothin but a heartache... Where's my inhaler?"

I know that Alex Brightman has some weird thing with his vocal chords that he uses for the character voice. the later actors used a different method.❤ Beetlejuice was my first ever musical.

I heard Dead Mom for the first time during karaoke at a high school cast party(we did Joseph) when the sixth grader who played Benjamin sang it. I actually cried, half because he was actually incredible at it and half because my grandma had died the year prior. I moved after that year, but a few years later that school did Hadestown, and guess who was Orpheus? I was so proud

31:30 it might be just from the recording. From the videos out there of Caruso singing on stage, she sings the “me” more like a screech at the end that does rhyme with how she sings “easy”

Maybe it's the non-native speaker in me, but I literary never noticed she changes "me" to "may". My brain just fills in the correct one based on context

Sophia Anne Caruso is actually in the Live Action One Piece as Miss Goldenweek and does a really great performance as that villain.

I would love to see your reaction to her as that character.

Highly recommend checking out Hannah Nordberg (West End Beetlejuice) performing Dead Mom. She added a new riff that is just absolute chefs kiss. Can't stop listening to it. The West End LIVE Beetlejuice video has her singing the whole song

Hey are there any kids in the audience?
Ope there one good job parents!
Sometimes puppet shows are sad…etc

I haven't seen anyone mention this, but when she says "wake me up until I'm 21" implies she'll drink her sorrows away bc that's the legal age to drink. Especially when the lyrics rhymes with "I want something to believe in or I'm done" This whole section makes sense if you read it differently.
I want something to believe in or I'm done
Take me where my soul can run
or I'll be in my bedroom, Wake me when I'm twenty one

I love BJ’s character portrayal in this musical because he really doesn’t understand boundaries at all and it sorta makes sense why he is the way that he is. He’s been watching people without anyone being able to see him for who knows how long. Makes sense that the first people he can actually interact with he’s a bit too forward and clingy. He’s already familiar with them, even if they have no idea who he is and he’s a bit…touch starved… He wants all the attention he can get! Is it appropriate? Hell no! But considering his situation it does make sense from a psychological standpoint why he’s a complete screwball with no concept of social boundaries and etiquette. And being a literal demon doesn’t help either…
