In 1886, Sarah "Sallie" Lockwood Winchester bought an 8 bedroom farmhouse in the Santa Clara Vallery in San Jose, CA, and over time, she would transform it into 160 room mansion - naturally, people believed this meant that she was cursed and this house was the most haunted place in the universe. Today, we will explain why that is not true

I'm a retired teacher and have been to the Winchester house a few times with my students. They no longer presented the Haunted House silliness on the last tour I went on (5 years maybe?). Instead they focused on the unending construction being a way for her to keep the workers and their families employed during tough economic times. It is now feels a lot more like a Hearst Castle tour.

History of the actual people are often times more interesting than urban legends.

I find her treating the home like an art project to be actually far more interesting then ghosts.

If the Winchester house was haunted due to the deaths the rifle caused, I'd be terrified to know how haunted the Lockheed martin headquarters is.

I’m actually blown away that this wasn’t a “rich old woman who had an undiagnosed mental illness that made her see ghosts” story because for years I figured that was the case… which makes this whole thing even more baffling to find out it’s ALL bullshit and she was just cool as hell and minding her own business.

Just the fact she died at the tender age of 83 is proof positive that she was cursed.

I am so so deeply grateful for this video. The whole "oooh, spooky house, crazy lady" thing that people repeat about this house makes me so incredibly angry. Sally was a brilliant woman, intelligent and curious, and the way people describe her as a crazy lady afraid of ghosts is insanely disrespectful.

Man. the world was a lot more fun when I was 13 and believed in all this ghost stuff. Now my idea of fun is listening to this guy with the funny cat picture tear it to shreds.

Always nice to hear that someone was just plain decent as a human being and didn't care about hoarding more money than they could ever spend. Always infuriating to hear the crap people will come up with just because. Sallie Winchester sounds like an awesome person, thanks for digging into her past and showing that!

God forbid a lady lives her own life the way she pleases, splurging on her special interests. She’s clearly unwell 🙄

I mean I get it. Someone with a ton of money being an actually decent human being is harder to believe in than ghosts.

Ah so the press just demonized an independent disabled woman minding her business, checks out

Ghosts when you marry a guy who's kinda responsible for selling guns that killed you: Grrr

Ghosts when their suffering is exploited for money over a century: zzZzz
