The ending is one of the things I love most about this movie -- it leaves you so unsettled, so uneasy. Absolutely chilling.

An ending that explained everything would have made it MUCH less creepy and unsettling. The ending that explained nothing was perfect.

At the end of the movie, Lydia finally accepts Melanie, and Melanie shows trust in Lydia. It’s a hopeful ending, in my opinion. If the birds are viewed as symbols of chaos, alienation and jealousy, the remedy for those things is attachment and love.

Little sister Cathy was played by young Veronica Cartwright, who later played Lambert in the science-fiction horror film Alien.

They got away! That was the point of the ending!!

"close the door she's dead!" Well I hope I'm never in a situation where I need your help.

Lovebirds are a species of small parrot known for forming strong pair bonds.

The title and basic premisse were based on a short story that was published in 1952, about Cornwall, England where the British writer Daphne du Maurier lived. She read in a newspaper about birds attacking cows, and saw huge flocks of birds that stirred her imagination further.

'Frenzy' (1972) is one of Hitchcock's best and I recommend it highly.

44:02 - She is sick because she saw her friend and teacher attacked and killed by birds and had to stand at the window, with Annie in plain sight. It's all very, very, very clear in her monologue. Wouldn't you be sick at age 11 forced to witness and to continue to witness this, and also to know that Annie died because "She pushed me inside"?

Tippy hedren was Hitchcock's favorite. She is Melanie Griffin 's mother and Dakota Johnson's grand mother

Early movies, especially horror films, didn't always wrap things up in a nice "Hollywood Ending" prevalent in more recent films.
Ditto for the slow burn. A fair amount of screen time was devoted to character development, intended to build audience empathy.
Make up your own ending. 😊

They actually trained a ton of birds for this. I toured Universal Studios in the late sixties, and the bird trainer was there demonstrating some tricks he taught them.

There was an ending where they made it as far as the Golden Gate Bridge, finding it covered in birds. They decided to leave it ambiguous.

The main cast members all became hugely famous. Tippi Hedren (as Melanie), Rod Taylor (as Mitch), Jessica Tandy (as Lydia), Veronica Cartwright (as Cathy) and Suzanne Pleshette (as Annie).

The ending is perfect. The Birds is not a sci-fi where everything has to be explained; it's an apocalyptic poem about human relationships. Sadly modern viewers judge time periods of time they're completely unfamiliar with. People did actually fall in love quickly and did pull out guns if you delivered some sandwiches.

The quickness of the romance comes from the crisis. These two would be playing games with each other if not for the bird attacks. Its like a rom com that suddenly turns serious.
