FYI, The Samaritans is a charity organization staffed by volunteers that offers a phone service for people feeling suicidal. So the joke was that because Basil can't get through to the Samaritans, he has to find other ways of surviving the day.

I’m Dutch but still use Manuel’s expression “ I know nothing, I’m from Barcelona “. Also a very popular series in the Netherlands and this episode was really number one 😂.

This episode is why "I know Nothing" said in a Spanish accent became a common saying in the UK

50 years later, Brits of a certain age will still say 'I Knowa nothing' with a hint of a Barcelona accent

I was 14 when this episode first aired. Next day in school, every question from the Teacher was greeted with the answer "I know nothing" in our best Manuel voices. 😃

"is this a piece of your brain?" during rehearsal, andrew sachs (the man who plays manuel) noticed how that line was suddenly missing. confused, he asked cleese why the line has vanished. cleese had decided that the line was too silly and so he removed it. but sachs protested, insisting that the line was brilliant and it should be put back in. cleese accepted and so we can all thank sachs for his contribution to the writing here.

John Cleese and Joan Sanderson were friends, and he specifically wrote the role of Mrs. Richards in Fawlty Towers with her in mind.
Despite Sanderson's reluctance to play the part, due to the character's unpleasantness, which contrasted with her own personality, Cleese convinced her to take the role.

He was delighted with her performance and considered it his favorite episode of the series.

When the actor who plays Manuel - Andrew Sachs - passed away, this episode was screened specially as a tribute.

I'm from Torquay and can confirm, watching the daily herd of wildebeest truly is majestic.

Joan Sanderson plays this role brilliantly..

When he points to his fly and Polly says “Small…” 😂

I use the "Please, please try to understand before one of us dies!" meme all the time at work 😂

@DavidKennaway1 1 year ago

The moment for me is when Basil is acting out the name of the horse and he is flapping his arms and pointing at his wife and Polly says, " flying tart". Pure comedy gold.

@neillydun 1 year ago

'Trouble and strife' is a prime example of rhyming slang...trouble and strife = wife.

I love how Manuel flicks his wrists adopts the dramatic pose and clears his throat before delivering the line "I know nothing" as if he's been practicing it, and this is his time to shine 😂

Even after fifty years, faulty towers never ceased to make me to cry with laughter. So much British comedy is like this; you can watch it over and over again and it is always like the first time you watched it. British comedy is the gift that just keeps on giving..

Brilliant!
Polly deliberately had Manuel "help" the old woman.
She knew what would happen. 😂

@ChaseOakley-rw2lx 1 year ago

The way Polly says "Dragonfly" in relief will be one of the best delivered lines ever.

The women who brilliantly played the hard of hearing guest is actress `Joan Sanderson` who also regularly appeared in a sitcom series called `Please Sir`
