Princess Olga is also known for burning down a city through creative use of pigeons, she rocked up on the same people's city with an army after she'd murdered their leaders then demanded a tribute of birds from the eves of the people's houses for her army to eat. Rather than eat them they tied bits of brimstone (sulfer) to the birds feet and waited till the sun was going down, then thy lit the sulfer which smolders slowly and let all the birds go, the birds all flew back to their nests which were in the thatched roofs of the houses of the city setting fires all throughout it, Olga and her army then sat back and watched while the city burned down. This woman was later made a saint...

1:30 Imagine living in a time when, not only is there no Google, but if you want to gift your wife a recipe book, you'd have to write it yourself.

14:00 It lets gas out, but not in. It's important when homebrewing in glass containers, unless you were planning to redo your kitchen after it explodes, anyway.

Yes, wood absolutely has a huge influence on flavor, especially wood chips. The amber color of whiskey, cognac, etc. comes from wood

I've never thought of Viking when hearing the word "mead"... I think of the ambrosia of Greek Mythology and peoples who lived way "before" that.

We know Paws would go full Olga in a situation like that.

I once had a blueberry honey mead once. It was amazing.

I have a half gallon of this stuff fermenting right now! It already smells nice. Gonna let it age and drink it next Christmas.

Princess Olga: And who are you, the proud lord said, that I must bow so low...

Important note for anyone making this recipe: DO NOT POUR WATER INTO BOILING HONEY!!
Literally his entire comments section was yelling at him for this terrible advice. If you pour cold water into boiling honey or any other boiling sugar, it'll instantly vaporize and sputter and toss globs of hot sugar everywhere and you'll end up with sweet sticky napalm all over you causing serious burns. You can seriously lose an eye to something like this.
Just take the honey off the heat once it's caramelized, let it cool off, pour the water in, and THEN heat it all back up while stirring to dissolve the honey into the water. You get to keep both your eyes and all your skin that way.

This whole video makes me want to get back into home brewing, but not being able to taste the output makes it a bad idea on many level.

Grains of Paradise are a fruit from a plant in the ginger family. This is why it has an echo flavor to cardamom, but different, say comparing galangal & ginger.

I read Olga's story in Princesses Behaving Badly

I’ve been hoping for this reaction!

Yay more Paws Tasting History reacts! 😊❤ I love this channel.

18:18.......Back at you Paws

Yay more tasting history!

18:11 Olga was rus and slavic. The Rus where actually vikings who settled in Russia. So the connection between mead and vikings is there. Even though it was probably more of a slavic specialty. Rather than something that was actually made by norsemen that much.

11:50  Grains of paradise is pretty good. They really do have abit of a citrusy taste. It's weird how it got so obscure in europe. It's also called melegueta pepper here.

Man I learn a lot from this vedio ain't going to lie. No wonder why people like yourself like him and his channel. He does great work with teaching you when it comes to food and history as well.
