We don't have outlets, we have sockets.

The separate taps is a legacy thing keeping clean potable (drinking) cold water separate from tank fed bacterially prone hot water systems. We are just sooo used to it, it is not remotely inconvenient. In fact I do have a combo tap in my own kitchen, but I still flush through with the cold alone before making a drink out of sheer suspicion of the bacterial likelihood from the warm!

Speaking of retail "loopholes" in UK, during COVID, stores could only sell essentially items, food etc. my local garden centre had this promotion " buy an apple, get a lawnmower free" apples were £99 each 😂

No, there is never a problem with the switches

Washing your hands in cold water is not the end of the world.

21:01 acceptable responses to alright, are: "not bad ta, you?" And "alright." That's all you need to know 😂

Milk and sugar are both optional. However, even if you take neither, you must have both on hand, to offer to visitors.

Nothing sadder than a Henry in a skip 😂

Never heard of browsing hour and I have lived in the UK all my 66 years.

I hate self checkouts i like to deal with a human much more reliable.

The safe wall light switch was invented in  Newcastle-upon-Tyne,  every wall light switch on the planet is based on this principle.

A ground floor is made on the ground. The first floor is the first floor which is hung. As all American floors are hung, then in America there are very few floors made on the ground. This is the reason that it becomes confusing to an American.

17:23 I do have separate taps, but I haven't had hot water in over 6 years so it doesn't matter either way

Here in the UK we have VERY stringent rules for electrical safety. For starters our supply voltage is 240 volt which packs much more of a punch than the US 120 volt. It is by legal decree that engineering for electrical sockets must provide function to assure electrical safety. The switch allows you to break the connection to voltage prior to you removing or inserting a plug, which could otherwise create an arc (spark) - a potential fire or shock risk. The top pin; the earth or protective connection , is longer to connect first. It also, when inserted, opens the internal flaps for the other two power connectors. The "live" and"neutral" pins, which are designed for circuit current flow and therefore functionality of the device, have insulation covering them so that there is no exposed conductive material outside of the socket when they come into contact with the internal connection to volts. This prevents fingers from touching anything "live". The cable exiting downwards prevents accidental puling of the plug from the socket during use (A common occurrence in the US I believe!). The installation must also be designed so that current flow, in the event of a "fault" between "live" and "earth" ( the top, longer pin) will operate the protective device ( Fuse or Miniature Circuit Breaker) within 0.5 seconds. This is to prevent fire risk. This is all by Law! There is also so much more to be said, but is a " brief" summary as to why UK socket outlets are as they are and why, to us at least, US sockets und plugs look fraught with risk and probably for cheapness/profitabilities sakes!

Basically the store can only sell goods after 10 am, but the law does not say you can't be in the store. So they let you in early so you can pick your items and as soon as it hits 10am the cash tills open, and they're  immediately taking cash instead of waiting while you do you shopping. Good business sense.

What is wild to me is that in the USA you have a place called Moscow which you pronounce Moss-co rhyming with Roscoe. You pronounce Moscow the Russian city Moss-Cow. Make that make sense!

Our power sockets in the UK are considered as probably the best and safest in the world. Each plug has a fuse contained within it. Therefore, if there was ever a fault in say an iron, the nearest safety device (fuse) would blow, therefore cutting off the power to the iron, but leaving the rest of the sockets working. Also, because the power (voltage) is twice that of the US. We use 220/230 volts, whilst you’re using 110/120 volts. This also men’s that we don’t allow sockets inside bathrooms, unless it’s large enough to be outside of a “water zone” (toilet, bidet, bath, shower). Lighting inside the bathroom would be on a cord with the light switch on the ceiling, or a light switch (if a small room), on the outside of the room wall as you enter. Therefore most bathrooms don’t have power sockets to use hair dryers. The only thing you might find is a 110/230 volt socket outlet to allow the use of a shaver or tooth brush. (These sockets have there own dedicated earthing arrangement within, allowing for safe usage which I won’t go into here). Taking a domestic dwelling (house), the sockets on each floor are On a ring circuit rated at  13 amps each. The distribution board in the house would have a number of circuits; downstairs lights, upstairs lights, downstairs sockets, upstairs sockets, cooker (that’s rated higher than 13 amps and needs a dedicated circuit. Maybe if the house has a garage, then that too may be on the distribution board, or have its own dedicated distribution board within the garage. And lastly things like door bells, if electrically operated, which some are, they too may have a dedicated Residual Current Device ((RCD). Unlike US sockets, you are not going to get an electrical shock off a UK socket because of the safety devices used, unlike US versions, which are quite unsafe in the rest of the world.

I'm 62 and no one has ever said "Are you alright?" as a greeting.
I am often greeted with "Alright?".

Oh! The 2 tap issues americans/canadians seem to have in britain, when there is a plug for the sink. How hard is it to put the plug in, turn on both taps for a few seconds, partially fill the sink with the temperature of water you like??? Just coz yanks/canadians have no water metres, and just waste water having a dual tap (faucet), running constantly! Just plug and fill, not bloody hard, is it?? I will trust 1 cold tap for drinking, over a dual one anyday!!

An American child was a fan of the "Henry" vacuum cleaner, he was ill with cancer, the factory/manufacturer flew him and his family over for a visit and awarded his with a "one of" vacuum cleaner with his name and built from his favourite colours!
