In movies, a nuclear weapon main destructive effect is blast. In reality, the main destructive effect is the flash and the radiation. Looking directly at the blast will burn your retina instantly making you either blind permanently or temporaly. The heat burn your flesh, neutron and gamma radiation will wreak havoc with your DNA if not kills you outright.

How can anyone make a “best of” nuclear explosions list and not include T2? It’s probably still the best one ever on film.  It’s haunting and incredibly accurate.

I love how the lights on the truck still work after the blast. The EMP from the detonation would have fried every circuit in it.

I don't know what's more unbelievable, not being made blind by looking into the nuclear flash, or somehow surviving without so much as a broken bone after tumbling around with no seat belt on.

2 aliens are talking in outer space, looking down on Earth.
"It seems the inhabitants of planet Earth have created nuclear technology and missiles" says one alien
"are they showing signs of intelligence?" asks the other
"I dont think so. They seem to be aiming at themselves"

"Can ya see anything?" and woman looks directly where blast will be and only covers her eyes seconds after it has gone off with a flash that would have melted her eyeballs...
WOW, such realism!!!!

“You didn’t see the new Indiana Jones movie?”
“Sure I saw it... I just try not to think about it.”

She would be blinded right now, looking directly at the blast.

Indiana Jones may have got things wrong in terms of coming out of that fridge as anything other than a mass of broken bones and jelly, but at least they remembered to portray the heat damage, which travels at the speed of light, so it quickly outpaces the blast wave.

i hate it when they stare at nuclear blasts that shit will burn your eyes

Women asked: What happens if it's gets to zero? It's called: CABOOM

Lead lined refrigerators were extremely popular in the 1950s.  They provided excellent insulation properties and were light weight to boot.  I like how the #1 ranked has no sound and doesn't even show the giant mushroom cloud which was the highlight of that scene.

Since we're talking about technical "errors," I will note that the nuke that goes off in "Dr. Strangelove" is actually from a multi-kiloton test in Nevada, much smaller in yield than the 30-megaton monster bomb described earlier.

You put in a few I didn't even know about.  I would recommend the following for consideration if you do a follow up list.
"T2-Judgement Day"(1991) had a really good nuke destroying LA in a dream Sarah Connor has.
"War of the Words"(1953) might just be the first attempt to portray a nuclear explosion in a film.  It holds up.
"20,000 Leagues Under the Sea"(1954)  The destruction of Vulcania.  "Thar she blows!"
"Aliens"(1986)  The atmo processing plant on LV426 goes critical, and Bishop barely gets our heroes away in the dropship.
"The Core"(2003)  5 sequential nuclear explosions in the outer core of the Earth to restart it spinning to save the world.

The day after is one of the scariest I've seen. The effects may not be as fancy, but the nature of the film is just very effective even now seeing it many times.

Them: *standing in front of the explosion*
Radiation: AM I A JOKE TO YOU

Have you seen Threads?  Now THAT deserves to be on a list like this.  It was scary and very graphic.

When the missiles start flying, I’ll be heading straight for the nearest Ground Zero. Instant vaporisation is much better than the alternatives.

You can’t look into the flash of the initial explosion because in that instance it is 300 times brighter then the sun..

You can't outrun a shockwave!
