I didn't like Pikmin 4

Pikmin 4 came out a year ago as of this video's release, and I think it has a LOT of problems fans don't discuss fairly. Join me on a ludicrously long journey about why Pikmin 4 deeply disappointed me (and what it did right).

PS Thanks to Joe for reading over my script to make sure I don't sound like a big dummy. I'm thanking you here because you're the person most likely to read the description.

I liked Pikmin 4 but hated how they made it feel like the other games never happened. I was really looking forward to the koppai captains returning or even olimar mentioning them at all.

Someone else finally said Pikmin are just ammo in this game thank fucking god

One big thing for me is how the whole narrative with Wraiths was just, dropped. By Pikmin 3 there were implications that the Wraith creatures might have a hand in the strange happenings of the planet like the constant, inexplicable ship crashes across the series. But no, all 4 has is the Submerged Castle (because over half the game is just "remember berry" moments)

Pikmin 4 was like a gaming red pill for me or something. When I finished it I couldn't understand why I hated it so much, considering it did so much more than the past games. It forced me to realize that games often need to remove things to be interesting, and that many things players called "unfair" or "bad design" were misguided. I realized the importance of subtle differences that most people say are interchangeable, and I stopped believing in giving players an unlimited selection of options to alter gameplay (obv depends but more focus should be put on hand-crafted balance)

It’s weird to me. My sentiment, along with most that I see, is that this game was one step forward, five steps back, and yet so many people say it like it’s a hot take. Maybe I’m just not casual enough or in the loop enough to get it, but this seems more like the net opinion to me.

Cut 95% of the dialogue game goes up from 6 to 7 make Pikmin do things 7 to 9

@markymarkgames4198 1 year ago

One thing I like about 3, is that the dialogue audio was actual unique language, as if the characters were actually speaking in there real language. But now in 4 its just the same 3 or 4 blurps

One thing i have against the game is not respawning overworld enemies. Is Nintendo that worried kids will ragequit?

@kelsey_edits 1 year ago (edited)

i agree with all of your points, but for the louie part, i got a line that was the crew asking olimar why louie does it and honestly it doesn't help the point at all because all he says was "i always told him to follow what i do" which explains it but also makes the plot worse

Took the pikmin out of pikmin

People are still in the honeymoon period somehow, but hopefully more people start speaking out against it soon because I want my franchise to not be like this 🗿

Who would have thought every single game Nintendo made in 2023 would get its own Zelda cycle

@snarmar5420 1 year ago

its so weird that Nintendo released two highly anticipated sequels a month a part (years after the previous games) but both have unnecessary retcons, and mechanics that undermine the appeal of those series in some way. makes me worried for Nintendo games in general.

While I do think that the series overall portrays Olimar as intelligent, Pikmin 1 definitely portrays him as gullible if you read what he has to say about his ship parts.

Pikmin 4 to sum this up in one scentace "Pikmin 4 is a good game but a bad Pikmin game" my favourite parts of the 1st 3 games are completely gone. The whole thing of the Pikmin serise was it's unique and original game design the 1st 3 games are so extremely charming but it feels like when they made this they weren't thinking about what made the 1st 3 special and instead making it a regular game so more people would play it.

Pikmin 4 is a bad fanfic in which the awful dog is an OC.

Pikmin 4 hurts so much 😓

When I went into this game I was so excited to see how they would follow up 3’s story. I was so excited because of the decade of fan theories that had been floating around in my brain. Needless to say when I realized that this was a soft reboot I was taken out of the story and world. PNF 404 was such an interesting world before and now it’s been scrapped for a shallow version of itself. I continued playing because I grew up on pikmin and I wanted to see it succeed. The more I played it only got more disappointing. This game felt like it was trying to pander to old pikmin fans with fun throwbacks while actively destroying what made the series so beloved.

@saku9177 2 years ago

Great vid,even as someone who still enjoyed the game it's hard not to feel like something was off about it compared to the others while I was playing it. Which sucks to admit since I was hyped for it for the whole 10 year wait period lmao

I do like how pikmin get smarter and less dumber but only from 1-3. Its kind of a story point where they get smarter per game and learn to defend themselves better, which is a nice narrative explanation to their ai
