Consider this a sort of reboot recreation style thing! as i have long been wanting to do something for the OLD videos with
god awful audio quality! I will leave the old versions up too whenever i do these and i will try to keep them a bit different too
rather then mere re-recording... tough... I am looking into remastering the old big lore series with more animations!

Knights are essentially what you come up with when you need a machine that can cut timber, mine metal, build fortresses, and wrestle giant dragons all at the same time. Yeah, there are machines better at cutting down trees and processing lumber, drills better at digging up iron ore, and construction crews better at building houses, but none of them can do their specialist task AND fist fight a fire breathing dragon

The knights were ancient humanities versions of heavy-duty farming equipment for mid to large colonies. This means early Knights were likely bright yellow with a black "CAT" written on the side.

It says a lot that one of the most notable things about the Knight Houses in 40k is that their nobles legitimately care about the common people.

On every world where the Knights survive, it turns out the Knights were good enough.  There does remain the possibility of worlds where that didn't turn out to be the case.

I still like the explanation that the colonies started relying on the knights for security and major work projects until the world just starts elevating them more and more

The astonishing part is that humanity more or less spent a few thousand years on the Knight and ended up with a machine so near perfect it could fight Eldar knights with their 65 millions years of pedigree and sometimes win. It proves just how extraordinary the STC system really was and why it's so coveted in the 41st millennia.

From a colonization standpoint I imagine the Knights were phase 1 equipment,  versatile, easy to operate and swap out equipment. Once the colony is established the Knights would be phased out for dedicated and specialized industrial equipment. Though I think it's less the presence of dangerous wildlife and the lack of network infrastructure for the old AI driven equipment that made the Knights a necessity. I imagine a lot of the better defensive and industrial equipment that were automated or at least required some level of AI support probably require a decent network to operate,  the Knights make a good stopgap until those systems can be set up.  So the Knight Worlds whether being new colonies at the beginning of the AI rebellion or just never advanced to the next phase had to make do with the initial equipment

I love the fact that humanity had mecha before blueberries figured out fire and stone tools.

I have to say, what has sold me a little more ok knights was the assassinorum: kingmaker novel.
Between the bonding ritual and the scene where the protagonists arrive on an arminger walking down a massive palace hall towards the massive Castellan (I think) of the world's ruler while being flanked by tens of other knights.
Both those scenes really sell the ancient venerable machine and the noble world with a lot of ritual and ceremony

On the bunker question; protecting people isn't the only goal. You wouldn't want the monsters eating all of your crops or simply destroying years worth of construction work or something. That could cause all sorts of problems both short term and long term.

Ah yes, GW's attempt to bring Titans into regular 40k

JK, they're pretty cool

Yes! The Knights! He did this before, long ago, so I'm glad he's doing it again. The lore in 40k, the history on tabletop, and just how incredibly cool they are.

Knights are so badass! If I could have any mech vehicle in all of 40k, it'd be a Knight. Battle cannon and Chainsword combo, standard/common issue for the loadout.

2014? It’s really been that long? screams in horror at how much time passed

Nice to see you giving this a do over.

Daemon Knights were Slaanesh's unique daemon engines in the original Epic wargame, contrasting Tzeentch's Silver Towers and daemonic airships, Nurgle's siege towers, and the ridiculous array of daemon engines that Khorne got. They were the only Chaos-aligned Knight-type mini-Titan in the game, and in ascending order they were called Hell-Striders, Hell-Scourges and Hell-Knights.

Knights really do need the ability to take some basic infantry in their army list.

So knights being combat modified now basically makes them the 40k equivalent to killdozer

As for Slaaneshi Knights, pretty sure that Slaanesh did corrupt that one Knight House on Molech.

4:43 it’s funny in a way you’re describing horses,

Horses were probably used for work, and then someone decided to put armor on them and ride them into battle .

A bit of an abbreviated summary, but once again, it is a very human tradition of taking something used as farm equipment and repurposing it as war gear

i remember one fan story where even when they are finally done with all their rituals and actually deployed, their knightly honor and the self assuredness piloting a giant mech gives you means they werent really able to be ordered around with the rest of the formation and were prone to... well... wandering off on a murder spree towards a more appealing target. and theres not a whole lot you can do about that
