A Texan Who Never Heard of This Sport Became a Champion... Mason Cox's Story Is Unbelievable 😤

Greggo

Mason Cox is from Texas. He played basketball
at Oklahoma State. He had never heard of
Australian rules football in his life. Then
scouts spotted him at a combine in LA. He
moved to Australia, struggled for over a year,
suffered two detached retinas requiring six
surgeries — and led Collingwood to the AFL
Grand Final. This story is unbelievable.

Mason played for Collingwood from 2015 to 2025 and since 2026 he plays for Fremantle at age 35.

He was signed as a Category B rookie. It’s like a free hit for the recruiting team. Most Category B rookies never play a senior game, they’re essentially experiments.

He'll never be remembered as 'one of the greats' of our game but, he has played the game at the top level and won a premiership medal and there are many MANY greats of our game who haven't got one of those including Nathan Buckley.
May yet get another with Fremantle.
So..... Kudos to him.

2:12 his accent is a weird mash up of Australian and Texan….

Mason Cox is also a premiership player, won a grand final with Collingwood in 2023, I'm a Collingwood supporter and I loved having him at the club, he's a great player and isn't done yet and by the looks of it this year he can win another grand final

Us Collingwood supporters had to process the whole idea. It was a struggle on both sides. But he became our favourite Aussie Texan. Love ya nate ❤

We aussies all loved to hate on mason when he first came over. All wanted to see him head back home, tail between his legs. Cant speak for all aussies, but i grew to love the guy cos he was sooo damned determined and never gave up, despite - what has to be said - was undue criticism. The guy, in my eyes at least, set a shining example of what we aussies pride ourselves on - the underdog never giving up! True champion.

On the other hand/foot . . . There are Australian Aussie Rules footy players who are now PUNTERS (because of their excellent kicking skills) in the American football league.

Mason's storie is one of the best international player stories. AFL doesn't register outside of Australia, but Mason took a chance and has done a lot in the community as well

Currently playing for Fremantle, Western Australia. For the first time in many years Fremantle are well placed to win the championship.
If they do, Mason will have a Grand final medal that for us is our Superbowl. He will never forget it.
And Australian history will remember him forever.

Loving all your Australian content especially the AFL. As an Aussie living in the USA I miss the AFL and my team The Collingwood Magpies. Was thrilled to see your thoughts and enthusiasm on Mason Cox even though he now plays for another team. Keep up the great content and thank you.

Mason is Australian now as he has become an Australian citizen. Not the first American to play Aussie Rules but the most successful.

Pat McAfee became a fan of the game a few years ago. He got really interested and interviewed Mason Cox. Pat then also came out to Brisbane last year and got to a Lions game while here.

Mason picked up the Aussie accent very fast. 👍🏼

The coach that you said looks good is Nathan Buckley and is one of the best players of all time.

He's not an elite player by any stretch, but credit where credit's due. To go across the world to play a sport you've never heard of at the highest level is ballsy as hell, and he worked hard to earn regular selection in the Magpies' senior squad. He proved a lot of people wrong, including me. He plays for Fremantle now and may well win his second premiership this year.
