Is it only me or is the idea that one dead man in the snow could end up changing where Yorkshire stopped and Lancashire began is exactly the sort of local history that deserves to survive??? You can explain ceremonial, administrative and historic counties for hours, but one battered stone on a bleak moor somehow makes the whole argument feel real. I spend time on my own channel walking overlooked British places and chasing stories like this, so this one had me immediately. The best boundaries aren’t the neat lines on maps. They’re the ones where somebody can still point at a stone in the middle of nowhere and tell you why it matters.

Even though you didn't get as far as you hoped, I found this exploration really fascinating, if a trifle nerve-wracking. I kept telling myself that you must have made it home, because the video's been uploaded.
As far as boundaries go, my rational brain says that, ultimately, millions of years from now, they won't matter. But my heart replies that on a human scale history matters, and history is full of borders and boundaries and the stories which have arisen from them. Anyway, I like an ancient boundary stone, and the mystery which often surrounds them.

You did the right thing calling it off. My ankles were aching watching you on that bracken covered moorland.

I am a volunteer, surveying rights of way in Somerset and I can understand your frustration when a right of way can't be followed on the ground and you have to give up. I have had to turn back up on paths which are unwalkable, unsafe, closed off or fenced off (sometimes illegally). You ask yourself 'what am I doing here?'. There is nobody around to help or guide you. But it is part of the adventure of walking. On the other hand it is rewarding when you eventually find an old monument or stone that few others have visited and has a unique history. Some years ago it took me four attempts to find two Lancashire stones (Robin Hood's Well and Ellen Strange's memorial), but it was worth the effort. Keep walking!!!

One of the things I always loved about where I live in North Lancs: I am a short distance from Cumbria and Yorkshire, so get to enjoy the beauty of all three relatively easily.

I love that the wooden ladders/platforms over the fences have been ingrained there so long, they are covered in a lot of lichen like the stones.

I've always been fairly interested in the history of counties as I was born in a county that no longer exists - Avon

I live near the Essex-Hertfordshire border - and I read in an academic paper that the River Lee was the boundary at one point was between Saxon lands and Viking lands, and the Vikings used to raid across the River Lee, as the provisions allowed, and pass near my house a thousand plus years ago. I especially like that because I am descended of the Border reivers, as the name suggests, were thieves on the Border - and indeed raided as far as north Yorkshire, and one murderous raid lead to someone's head being removed in the city of York and been taking back across in Scotland in a revenge attack.
