I hate how AI is so ingrained in EVERYTHING. I felt so disgusted when I got a call from cancer research asking for donations and realizing the "person" talking to me was actually AI. Like it made me not want to help. I should feel sympathy, understanding, feel something for those who have to deal with this life changing thing. Instead Im turned off. Emotionally checked out and hit with "fucking AI again Im tired of this shit"
Like theyre taking the humans out of roles that NEED HUMANS
Recently in my city (in India) a man took his life after he returned from the US because he was laid off by a US company that listed AI as the reason. His wife discovered him and also took her life. There's actual real consequences to this nonsense.
Regarding that last statement: While I appreciate the sentiment, I have a few things to say. I don't think AI itself is an issue, but generative AI is, to an indefensible degree. I'm a simple guy - I hate exploitation. We live in a system full of it though. Generative AI is the first tool in history that is exploitative on such a massive scale, that it exceeds comprehension. While I have a car, I don't drive it often enough in a year to create the carbon footprint that 2 minutes of using an LLM does. Generative AI is the first tool that's made not just on the backs of exploited workers, but also on stolen work. In fact, there would be no generative AI right now, if companies had to even spend a dime per data-point to create their image-/video-/text generators - a dime would still massively undersell the value of books, scripts, artworks, the copyright behind it, etc.
No tool is worth the harm AI leaves us with, especially not one that is as unethical in its origin and use as this one.
Just because genAI is a “tool” doesn’t mean it’s a good tool that makes things better or easier. A spanner is a tool, but it’s not going to help me cook dinner.
my whole friendgroup is in either art or tech colleges and they are literally being forced to use AI and they are literally being told that they won't be able to get jobs when they finish. my other friend is still looking for a job after literally *2 years of non-stop looking and interviews*. we're all 20 or 21, like holy shit bro.
I have 10 years of professional experience as a 3D artist and animator, with a wide range between game art cinematics and marketing. I've worked at senior level, managing smaller teams. I've done project management. I've worked on AAA titles. *I* can't find jobs. I've been unemployed for 2 years, with only minor contracts and going back to school to collect student loans keeping me afloat. I can't even imagine how cooked newly-grads are, never-mind people like me who have already built a career. I'm just watching my entire profession crumble in real time.
My mother worked for a large pharmaceutical company in the 80's, she begged for a assistant because the work load was too much, she finally got one in the mid 90's and didn't realize the assistant was her replacement who needed training. My mother was at max salary.
Any thought of the most successful companies in the US to actually have a vested interest in a happy/healthy society was burned to the ground by the Boomers in the 90's.
None of these companies are actually seeing any profits from their LLMs, and the companies firing employees to buy products built off those LLMs are going to be in for a rude awakening when the 200 billion dollar product isn't being offered for 15 bucks a month anymore...
