Loved your reaction to Scary Monsters and Super Creeps. It is genuinely one of Bowie's best records and your take really captured why it still holds up. It's fascinating how the album sits right at the hinge point of his career, closing out the Berlin era while pointing straight into where music was heading in the '80s. Bowie wasn't just riding the New Wave movement, he was one of the people who planted its seeds, you can hear it in the jagged guitars, the drum treatments, the whole nervy, angular energy of the record.
A bit of trivia you might enjoy: "It's No Game" actually has roots going back to Bowie's teenage years. The lyrics and melody grew out of one of the very first songs he ever wrote, called "Tired of My Life". He revisited and reworked it a decade later for Scary Monsters, recording it twice for the album. If you're curious, the early acoustic 1970s demo floats around online and it's wild to hear the bones of that song a decade before it became something so much darker.
"Ashes to Ashes" has some interesting melodic phrasing: Bowie said in a 2003 interview that the whole thing wouldn't have happened without "Inchworm," a wistful little song sung by Danny Kaye in the 1952 film Hans Christian Andersen. He talked about how it had that deliberate nursery-rhyme cadence to it, sad and simple at the same time, and said he kept circling back to that feeling throughout his career. You can hear that same nursery-rhyme quality land in the song's closing chant, "My mother said, to get things done, you'd better not mess with Major Tom", a lullaby-like phrase sitting on top of all that cold, synthetic dread, which is part of what makes the song feel so eerie. Similar to "Ring-a-ring of Roses..." a dark subject, but is used as a child's nursey rhyme.
One last piece of history worth knowing: Bowie actually had plans to tour behind Scary Monsters but those plans were scrapped after his friend John Lennon was murdered in New York in 1980. It hit Bowie hard. He pulled back from touring entirely after that, and wouldn't return to the road until the Serious Moonlight tour in 1983, which makes Scary Monsters the last album of his most experimental run that the world never got to see performed live in its own era.
Thanks again for the reaction, this album deserves every bit of the attention you gave it.🥰😘
