✨ The Power of a Little Bit | As A Woman Thinketh — Chapter 5
What if you don't have to make one enormous change to create something meaningful?
What if you simply need to do a little bit today...and another little bit tomorrow?
In Chapter 5 of my As A Woman Thinketh Art Journal series, I'm exploring Thought and Achievement and one of my favorite principles—something I call The Power of a Little Bit.
I first learned this lesson while practising the piano. When I practised a little bit every day, those small amounts of practice accumulated and I improved. But when I tried to cram the same amount of practice in right before my lesson, it simply wasn't as effective.
A little bit + a little bit + a little bit eventually becomes a big bit.
For this art journal spread, I decided to make that principle visible through dot painting.
The pages already had some random elements on them—paint, stamped woodgrain and leaves—so instead of starting over, I worked with what was already there. I added yellow to the leaves to give them a fall feeling and then began building a mountain landscape, one tiny painted dot at a time.
And there were A LOT of dots! 😊
It was a slow process, but that became part of the message.
One dot doesn't seem very important.
Neither does one page of a book.
One prayer.
One walk.
One act of kindness.
One hour of practice.
One courageous decision.
One attempt to begin again.
But when we keep showing up and doing our little bit, those seemingly insignificant efforts can accumulate into something much bigger.
Chapter 5 also explores an important distinction in James Allen's original As a Man Thinketh. I don't believe every achievement—or every disappointment—is simply the result of our thoughts. We don't control every outcome. Other people have agency. Circumstances change. Sometimes we work hard and things still don't turn out the way we hoped.
So instead of asking, “How can I control the outcome?” I've been asking a different question:
“What is mine to do today?”
Do that part.
Do your little bit.
Then trust Jesus Christ with what you cannot control.
I also talk about comparison, especially the ways women can measure themselves against one another. Another woman's gifts don't diminish mine. Her success isn't evidence that I'm failing. Her path isn't my path.
Women need women.
I would much rather celebrate another woman's success than compare myself right out of the sisterhood I need.
💜 Maybe you have something in your life right now that feels too big.
Instead of asking how you're going to accomplish all of it, try asking:
What little bit can I do today?
Then come back tomorrow and do another.
You may eventually look back and discover that all those faithful little bits have become something beautiful.
🌿 As A Woman Thinketh is my Christ-centered reimagining of James Allen's classic As a Man Thinketh, written especially for Latter-day Saint women. I'm creating an art journal alongside the book, using each chapter as inspiration for a reflective art-journaling project.
