Watching George Carlin's "Religion is B.S." as a former missionary kid feels like a glitch in the matrix ya'll. The "divine plan" I spent 20 years defending is starting to look a LOT more like a bad business model. In this video, I'm reacting to George Carlin for the first time to see if his infamous take on God actually makes more sense than the theology I was raised with.

*disclaimer* I am sharing my journey, my perspective, and breakthroughs that have helped me navigate. I'm not posting to connect with current Christians who have no issues with the Bible. I'm not claiming to know everything other than what I've experienced. I am making + posting these videos because I wish I had videos like these to watch in the beginning of my own rocky deconstruction that started 10 years ago. I am not a therapist, I'm not a coach, I'm just a human who experienced and witnessed a lot of B.S. inside the religion of Christianity (including the missions organization I was raised in) and hopefully sharing these videos helps others not feel so alone in their journey. I also don't debate. I do what works for me, so you do what works for you 🥰

George Carlin made a brilliant observation about the absurdity of a common religious narrative: an invisible cosmic ruler watches your every second, forbids ten specific things, and threatens you with an eternity of fiery torture if you disobey. And the punchline? This entity loves you.

This logic is fundamentally flawed. A god who inflicts infinite suffering is unworthy of worship. You cannot reconcile the concepts of ultimate mercy and ultimate punishment in such a way. A truly loving god would not condemn, and a truly just god would not torture.

I once heard a catholic priest say that the Bible is like a person, if you torture it enough you can get it to say anything you want it to.

Joe Pesci, he was the short guy in the first two Home Alone movies that kept getting caught on fire and stuff. But he's most famous being in mafia movies, like Goodfellows.

I remember as a Christian, that I couldn't apply logical thinking to the Bible or else it would fall apart. I purposely avoided those thoughts because I believed the spiritual nature of all the illogical things had ways outside of my tiny human logical brain. Like it wasn't fair to apply my logic to the bible because the bible follows God's divine logic and miracle recipe. that lasted 30 years.....
I think of the lyrics from my favorite band Ghost, in the song Guiding Lights:
"If I could pause right here.
I would open my heart.
And tell you with no fear.
That the path we have walked led us into the dark.

There stood my God before me.
Do you know what they said?

I'm stunned how much I enjoyed your reaction. It's kind of amazing to hear someone like Carlin say a bunch of stuff you've kind of been thinking. Gives you license to think/explore more in spite of upbringing.

18 years ago I had a stroke which nearly killed me. When I returned to work (6 months later), someone came up to me and asked how I was. We started chatting and she told me that she had prayed for me. I said thank you, but I had to tell her that I didn't believe in god. Then she told me that I should turn to god, because he saved me!. She wouldn't let it go. I ended up having to report her for harrassment!

Who needs words like "hatred", "narcissism" or "psychopathy" when you have the "love of God" encompassing all of them. And who needs enemies when you have God at your side, ready to always punish you in the worst retaliatory way possible.

Hi Avery. Are you familiar with the late Christopher Hitchens?

If not, you should check him out. He was an atheist who did loads of debates against religious apologists and mostly owned them.

His little quips and put downs were known as "The Hitchslap."

If you haven't seen him before you definitely need to react to him.

Here's George Carlin's official YouTube channel (https://www.youtube.com/@OfficialGeorgeCarlin). It's run by his daughter since he passed away in 2008. You can go down a deep rabbit hole of his routines. He also acted and wrote several books. I would also recommend Lewis Black (a lapsed Jewish comedian), Richard Pryor and Redd Foxx (older African-American comedians) who worked "blue" (basically used curse words) and brought up and discussed the problems from their side of "The American Dream". They all have a way of making you laugh and think and leave you contemplating things in a different way. I'd also add Bill Hicks but he can be very polarizing. He died of pancreatic cancer but in that time he had left, he pulled out all the stops and was fearless with his comedy. There was the attempted hanging by some "christians" and he went out of his way to talk about the good side of some drugs. As an older guy who's listened to a lot of comedy, I'm happy to share some comedy. I'm sure others will add on or disagree, but that's how learn, right?
