Who is the Protect College Sports Act really protecting?

Bomani Jones joins Roland Martin after the bill passed the U.S. Senate 77–22 and moved to the House. Their discussion zeroes in on who gets controlled, who gets paid, and who gets a voice as lawmakers attempt to impose new rules on college athletics.

Bomani says the bill is about “maintaining control of players as much as anything else” and warns that provisions affecting antitrust leverage and collective bargaining could make it harder for athletes to gain real power over their labor and compensation.

The conversation also takes on the money surrounding college sports: massive coaching salaries and buyouts, conference and network interests, NIL compensation, and the push to cap what players can earn while institutions continue protecting their own financial interests.

Bomani argues that college athletes “have been rife for exploitation for as long as these games have gone on” and says the first question surrounding reform should be simple: “How does this help the athletes?”

Roland also centers what NIL has meant for Black athletes, including players who may never reach the NFL or NBA but can finally maximize their value while they are still in college.
