As The Pivot Sports launches, Roland takes viewers inside Black Star Network to show exactly what building Black-owned media requires.
Roland lays out the bills: $350,000 for lighting, almost $400,000 for an audio upgrade, $25,000 a month for studio space, and nearly $2,900 a month for fiber internet. He explains why he shut down streaming channels that cost more to distribute than they brought in through advertising, and why using someone else's distribution platform does not settle the question of ownership.
The financial reality extends beyond equipment. Roland challenges people demanding new Black-owned networks to support the businesses already doing the work. He says Black-owned media receives just 0.5–1% of nearly $400 billion spent annually on advertising, and calls out brands pouring money into major networks while leaving Black-owned outlets behind. Dr. Greg Carr and Mustafa join the discussion about investment, sacrifice, and the survival of Black media.
