Roland Martin and former NFL Players Association executive director DeMaurice F. Smith break down the Protect College Sports Act and what it could mean for the athletes generating billions in college sports.
Smith argues that the bill would give the NCAA more power over college athletes than major professional leagues have over adult players, while shielding the NCAA from the same antitrust laws athletes used to win greater freedom and bargaining power.
Roland also challenges the bill’s HBCU provisions, arguing that Black institutions and Black athletes are being used to help sell legislation that does not contain a funded mandate guaranteeing HBCU money.
Smith points to the history of Black athletes including John Mackey, Reggie White and Oscar Robertson, whose antitrust battles helped reshape professional sports, and warns against stripping college athletes of similar legal leverage.
