The pilots of an Air China Boeing 767 peer through dense cloud in search of the runway in Busan, South Korea. 155 passengers hold on to their seats as the plane banks sharply, just 700 feet from the ground.

The pilots don’t realise it, but they have strayed outside of the protected area prescribed in their charts. All around them, mountains are lurking in the cloud. Will they realise their mistake before its too late? Or will they careen headlong into a mountainside, just moments from landing?

This is the story of Air China flight 129.

Don't forget the heroic actions of survivor Seol Ik-Soo (설익수). He led 20 people away from the burning wreck. Also, he saved a majority of the tour group he brought to Beijing with. The morning of the fatal flight, he made a mistake that he thought would get him fired. You see, initially, Mr. Soo had made sure that his tour group had first class seats on the flight home to Busan. However, upon arrival at Capital Airport, Seol realized that he had left his passport at the hotel he and the group were staying at. They had to go back to the hotel for him to retrieve his passport. By the time they returned, the first class seats were already taken since Seol didn't claim them in time. They were then forced to sit in economy and that turned out to be their salvation...

Something I love about GreenDot is you’ve expanded the team, editing and visuals have progressed but the core structure and script which was perfect hasn’t changed ✅such an easy watch

@TAK-117 3 months ago

this would have been the perfect time to add the last 2-3min of just the plane flying without much commentary at the end of the video to show how fast shit happened

"to this day, flight 129 remains the only fatal crash of an Air China plane" - this is only true because Air China was renamed as such in 1988. Before, it was known as the state-run CAAC, which got the ignominious nickname "China Air Always Crashes" among Expats. Air China is extremely reliable and safe today but the wikipedia list of Aviation accidents and incidents in China is long for the 1980s, 90s and 00s.

0:25 "will they realize their mistake"? I m pretty sure thats not going to happen, otherwise this video wouldn't exist

I had you down as 20 years older. Man, you've done incredibly well to produce such high quality analyses, graphics, narration and structure.

Your format and the focus of your videos are unmatched. You prove that you don’t have to show your face or make it about yourself to be compelling.
Brilliant.

With that intro, I almost thought this was going to be the sequel to Train to Busan, Plane to Busan, and feature zombies

What's that old pilot saying? "Clouds at low altitude tend to contain mountains" or something like that. I always think of that in cases like these...

Thanks!
I will give what I can. One of the best aviation channels anywhere.

Expecting a captain make this landing that has never done it before is suicide. Depending on their fuel, they should’ve been instructed to hold until the weather cleared a little to use 36 right

Not following SOPs, lack of training, and no CRM results in another horrific aircraft crash. I’m not surprised. RIP to victims w/ prayers to all the friends, families, & others impacted this incident. 🙏🏼

This video omitted one of the most important factors that caused the crash as the Chinese government rebutted the official report from the S. Korea aviation authority - An unlicensed/illegal air traffic controller trainee WITHOUT supervision was on the mic working with the widebody in severe weather condition that gave delayed and incorrect instructions.
