What happens to a motion picture film print after its final screening?

In this video, I visit the Lithuanian Film Centre in Vilnius to explore how physical motion picture film is preserved and archived.

Together with Aleksas Gilaitis, Project Manager at the Lithuanian Film Centre, we look at how 35mm film prints are stored and catalogued, why temperature and humidity matter, and how ageing acetate film can be affected by shrinkage and vinegar syndrome.

We also discuss the current state of analogue cinema in Lithuania, the renewed interest in shooting and screening on film, and why preserving physical film prints still matters in the digital era.

A huge thank you to Aleksas Gilaitis and the Lithuanian Film Centre for allowing me to visit the archive and document their work.
