I Flew to the World's Biggest IMAX and Here's What I Found

Three years ago I flew to Germany to film the largest IMAX screen in the world — located at Traumpalast IMAX Leonberg, just outside Stuttgart.

In January this year, that video reached 500,000 views.

So I decided to refresh it — correct a few mistakes, update the narration, and revisit one big question:
👉 Has Leonberg reached the absolute limit of how big a cinema screen can get?

Officially recognised by Guinness World Records, the IMAX screen in Leonberg measures:
• 38.8 metres wide
• 21 metres tall
• 814.8 square metres
• Nearly 600 seats
• 12-channel next-generation IMAX sound
• Dual laser projection system

If you're an IMAX fan, cinema enthusiast, or simply curious how big a movie screen can really get — this is for you.

Looks absolutely incredible! Do you know what subwoofers they use? I've heard several people say they use 12" drivers, but I can't imagine 12" woofers filling an average iMAX theatre let alone this one. Don't suppose you know what iMAX use in an average screen for subs?

@ps_sanjayofficial 6 months ago

what size subs are used in this Traumpalast IMAX ?

I wonder what micro-led tech will do to cinema. Hopefully we can get proper resolution digital venues. And not 4K on a 20m screen.

So if one were to plan a trip to see the Odyssey from Christopher Nolan, since that was obviously shot in English, would we see that in English there with the German subtitles?

@TomDavies-y3m 6 months ago

It can always go bigger

Thank you very much sir interesting video wow I would like to go there when I go for holiday in Germany, but if you said most of the movies are in German language, hope they will be English as well, one good question is it too loud, hope not because I some people might say we're not deaf you know that, can your lower it down😮

I feel the synchronised light and sound show would be a distraction to the main show!
Enough to trigger an epileptic seizure in some people. Total overkill of technology.

While this is the largest screen at an IMAX theatre it's actually not the largest proper IMAX 1.43:1 screen. That is a record held by IMAX Melbourne which I think is the best IMAX theatre in the world as it has film 1570 projectors and dual IMAX laser projectors. So there is nothing that it can't play in its original aspect ratio.

I do love the aspects of this theatre, especially the lighting in Traumpalast Leonberg
