The first list of Maine towns where retirees thrive left out most of the state. These are eighteen more, and the best one is Brewer: a city's hospital and an airport for about two thirds of the state median. The catch: the towns that cost the most are not the closest to a hospital.

Every town here has a hospital inside the town line or within about twenty minutes. Prices run from about $250,000 in Winthrop to well over half a million in York and Yarmouth. Bridgton's property tax rate is half of what some Maine towns charge.
