Man out here setting the timing on a trolling motor 😅

I learned something today. I never knew you could tune a trolling motor. Thanks for the tip!

The way to tune a brushed DC motor is to advance or retard the motor brushes in relation to the housing magnets. You have to turn the main body or the brush housing. Basically the easiest thing to do to tune a trolling motor is to turn the main body of the motor not the end plate.

Thank you for this, lol I had to pull motor out and fix contacts. This fixed my tuning issue

I knew my trolling motor wasn't giving me power.  I tried this and when I turned it on I heard a grinding noise, I shifted the part till the noise stopped.  A little further it started back so i backed it off till it stopped again.  Tightened the bolts and tested it.  Put the prop back on and tested it. It seems to run a good bit better.  Thanks,

I actually have an aluminum boat instead of a yak but find your videos useful for what I do especially your trolling motor mods so im subscribed

I've seen several of these "tuning" videos.  All of them are tuned by ear under no load.  Faster no-load speed does not translate to more torque or thrust in the water & the declared "success" seems premature.  I'd like to see a "before" measurement of speed under load and amperage.  Then make the adjustment and measure both speed and amps again under same conditions.  Plenty of guys burn up their chainsaws tuning the carb at max speed under no-load.  They inadvertently make the fuel mixture too lean which overheats the engine when under load.  The only way to tune a  chainsaw is at full speed while cutting wood.

I did this on my 24lb watersnake yesterday, while i was at it i decided to open it up and add some lube to the bearings and vaseline to the o rings for better water resistance. When i took the first part of the nose off, there was a long black coarse hair left in there wrapped around the armature and crossing the o ring seals obviously left in there by the person who assembled it in the factory 😂

Anyway after removing the hair and adding some lube, i reassembled it to the factory marks. Then tested and all is good. I then turned the motor on and rotated the middle housing and far out the motor sounded like it gained a heap more speed. I rotated it about 10mm around until it wouldnt turn further then locked it up there. Cant wait to test it on the water!

Already liked and subscribed. This would work perfect with my Coleman Crawdad boat.

I can hear the difference in sound, but is it spinning faster or is that simply harmonics at varying hub positions?

Really good  well done and informative

That’s awesome, any lubrication necessary for below the sheer pin?

Iv never had a pin shear it always just takes the prop out 😂 thinking it’s probably a drive pin. Either way GOOD WORK!!

Nice job

Yessir, Drive Pin is the correct term

I have always done this with my past Minkota's. Leave the prop on when doing this.. Easy to hear it when its in the sweat spot, its quieter an less vibration. I tried it on my new endurance max and it made no difference

What an awesome video AND giveaway

I've read comments that if you mess around with the brushes like that your motor won't last !
I don't know for sure but I'm just saying .... I'll have to talk with some electric motor specialist about it ! LoL !
I'm going to tune mine up a tad , and see how she does !
Thanks for the video man  , much appreciated 👍

Awesome tip! I have an old  Power Plus Motorguide 30 lb Thrust I plan to cut shaft for a Kayak side mount project so will check if this fine tune applies on it.

So you're clocking the motor changing the motor timing. I used to do this with rc motors when I raced. Didn't think we could with these. Gotta try this now
