Stan a true hero didn't hesitate to sacrifice himself to save another. That moment is seared into my mind when I watched with my parents at 8 years old.

Great reaction. Just as a reminder, Mike's character is the head of the Office of Emergency Management (OEM) for the city. it is his job to oversee emergency response efforts, which he did. Although he definitely went above and beyond because not many people would have the resolve to combat a volcano. I love his determination.

It is absolutely that hard to evacuate. At the time of filming this movie the population of Los Angeles was 3.6 million people. They were mid disaster before they even knew something was wrong. Infrastructure was down, people were already panicking, dying, and stranded, and even if they could have gotten evac instructions to everyone the chaos of everyone in the city trying to exit at the same time would have left the majority of them as sitting ducks in miles of bumper to bumper traffic.

15:52.

Difference in the air pressure causes it to suck back in, it's a real concept applied to "Fire Pulsing".

Funny fun fact: La Brea in Spanish means "the tar." So, in English, it's literally called The The Tar Tar Pits. 😂 Xx

"Did it burn his poops?"
Jane says some of the funniest things.

I first remember seeing a teaser to this movie on the Independence Day VHS, it scared the hell out of me.

That's not Dolly Parton on the billboard. That's Angelyne, she was a media personailty and essentially a living landmark for LA in the 80s & 90s. She put herself up on billboards in skimpy outfits to gain attention and was offered acting and singing jobs because of the publicity.

(Im sure you've seen Twister & Twisters)
So many movies out there!

Many disaster movies that aren't "natural disasters" like Outbreak & Contagion etc...

The tar pits were an original dino trap

"Shoot the lava!" 😂😂

Anne Hech the actress that played geologist died 3 years ago from burns she received in a high speed crash. Tommy Lee Jones the main actor is in The Fugitive one of the best movies ever made.

31:15 actually yes evacuating IS that hard. For a small town it might not be but for a place like LA on such short notice? No, having thousands upon thousands of people run rampant through the streets trying to get away while the criminals are busy looting and mugging people is going to cause even more death and mayhem. He's focused on trying to control things, such as directing the flow of the lava, because getting everyone out of the city isn't going to happen.

I love that this movie didn't have a slow burn, it was really explosive from the start and the flow was great. What a fire movie. Ok, I'll stop now before people blow their tops.

No, there are no active volcanoes within the city of Los Angeles itself. The nearest active volcanic areas are over 150 miles away, such as the Coso Volcanic Field (approx. 181 miles) or the Salton Buttes (approx. 150 miles)

The fact that only a hundred people died sounds like either a miracle or damn good disaster response despite the extraordinary events that occurred.

I lived in Palmdale, CA, when this movie came out and saw it in our local theater. The entire audience cheered when we saw the "Palmdale 12 Miles" sign. 😅😅👍

A couple of 90s disaster films you guys haven't watched yet are Daylight (Sylvester Stallone) & Hard Rain (Christian Slater, Morgan Freeman).

34:28 What hurts me more of this death is that he was praying while he was walking what could be described as hell itself. All the metro melting around him and he was praying.

I grew up in L.A. This movie is a little far fetched, but not by a lot. The La Brea Tar Pits are real. OEM can drain pools into the flood control canals. And there never should've been a subway system built underground in L.A. Stupid idea! Btw.. there is one canal in L.A. that's very famous. Its been used in everything from Grease to Terminator 2 to Gone In 60 Seconds. Officially, its the Los Angeles River canal. But there's rarely any water in it. Its used for racing and car chase scenes.
