Which Pokemon game do you think deserves MORE hate??

Gen 2 was more like gen 1.5.  It was realistically an additional gen 1 game with new mons… Gen 3 is where it’s more into a new game

Tbh, you calling Johto's Team Rocket Giovanni glazers is a rare sentence I've never heard but glad I did now.

I think The Lighthouse is meant to be the stand in for Jasmine's "gym challenge"

One element about the original GSC that I feel like has been forgotten is that the 100 pokemon we now know as "Johto Pokemon" or "Gen 2 Pokemon" were originally explained as pokemon that were discovered in the 3 year gap between the events of generations 1 and 2. The likely thought process was that most trainers didn't use these pokemon as they don't yet know that they exist. It also explains why many of these pokemon are either rare or have unique encounter/evolution methods. If they were easily discovered by simply walking in grass, they would have been discovered before the events of gen 1. Of course after it was decided that pokemon would continue indefinitely after gen 2, saying that ~100 pokemon are discovered every few years isn't sustainable. This was retconed and the logic of introducing new pokemon turned into pokemon that were first discovered in the region the new games take place in. The remakes had to rewrite the Johto region for this logic but most pokemon kept their old encounter methods and enemies kept their old teams but now there's no in universe reason for why they barely use these pokemon or why they are so rare in Johto and Kanto. There are even some leftover dialogue from the original games that weren't removed like a person saying that Elm discovered that Pikachu was an evolved pokemon even though you could have gotten a Pichu in the kanto remakes.

You can be critical of something and still enjoy it, and that's a message that more people need to understand. Thanks for making this video, Glass. I think your point with this video is far more important than you could have ever realized :)

I'm more impressed that he played the whole thing with Chikorita only

I really love your critique on how modern games have flaws like over reliance on gen 1 callbacks and flat story but when the Johto games have the exact same issues the community considers it the best game ever.

Unown deserved better than just knowing the move Hidden Power.

35:36 ORAS mentioned- I love how it even redesigned the trainers to feel more alive.

17:33 Golden rod tower climax ;)

These games were innovative for their time; while their novelty has diminished somewhat, they remain enjoyable. I remember where I was and what I was doing when Gold and Silver came, just as I remember where I was and what I was doing when. Red, Blue, Ruby, and Saphire came out.

the reason johto gets a pass for Kanto pandering 45:02 is bc it wasn't seen as that bad of a thing until gen 5 and onward. The "gen wunners" vs the gen 5 fans were in full force after gen 6 release and its been a constant fight since then 😅😅

My biggest problem is how they didn't fix the core issues of gen 2 with the level disparities as well as finding the GOOD gen 2 pokemon until you're over halfway through it. Like yea i wanna be grinding against lvl 3-5 wild pokemon WHEN THE GYM LEADER IS LVL 15+. And whoever decided to make the Team Rocket "gauntlet" really hated gen 2.

I actually played through Crystal for the first time recently. (I started the series with Yellow in 2000) Played through it to Red, utilized the breeding system, and caught all the roaming legendarys. And I was genuinely shocked at how poorly the whole thing was designed. Particularly with the level curve and the moves that are learned through level-up. I decided to use a Xatu this time around and trained it up to 40 with it not learning any good Psychic moves. I looked up its Crystal moveset and it doesn't learn Psychic until level fucking 65. This made me realize that the game isn't designed around the Pokemon League being the endgame with Kanto being post-game, extra content, but rather Red being the actual endgame. This would explain why everyone is so low-level throughout the main game and why Red is so high-level. On paper, it's a decent idea. But it really really screws with the general pacing of everything. Another complaint is getting evolution stones before Kanto is extremely weird. You get them by having the phone numbers of specific trainers who will call you on the off chance they pick one up. Again, kinda cute on paper, but unbelievably frustrating if you actually want to have an evolution stone Pokemon during the main game.

Also yeah, your poll is correct. The Gen 5 games are easily the height of the series.

I feel like the reason Johto pokemon are underused is that Gamefreak wasn't working with the modern formula for pokemon as a team-building game where most new pokemon are meant to be used. Gen 1 was designed closest to a conventional RPG, a lot of pokemon are designed mostly as enemies and not something the player would want to use, then with Gen 2 they were trying to expand the collecting aspect of the game back when that was the biggest part of the marketing. They tried making a bunch of rare and obscure things to catch to the point that the reward for beating the game was more stuff to catch, and made more elaborate catching mechanics than just walking back and forth in grass, even if they ended up not being that fun. It's only with Gens 3 and 4 that they settle on the point of new pokemon being for the player to use them on a team.

38:49 uhhh Persona 5 is set in the real world Kanto Prefecture lmao

You can actually get evolve togetic directly after you beat the elite 4 by doing the pokeathlon. the shiny stone is one of the rewards there. The problem is that its still after you beat the game, and its so annoying because togekiss is such an amazing pokemon locked until the post game

'legendary dogs' .... one is modeled after a lion, another a sabretooth tiger, and a leopard.
legendary beasts.

You're just young bro.
As a Genwunner I was nitpicking the hell out of Gold & Silver.
It wasn't immune
