Hey Stephen, the caretaker retired about 10 years ago, after which someone else moved in, "uninvited". He was evicted last summer, hence the notice you saw. I was there last Autumn and the back door to the house was hanging open - glad to see it's been resecured. I'd be happy to send you a few photos from inside though if you'd like ;)

That mushroom is the Honey Fungus and it's edible. Also, fun fact: a colony of honey fungus is the largest living organism on Earth, located in Oregon, USA.

As kids dad used to take to Coney Island either in a wee metal speedboat or we’d canoe across in a wooden Canadian he had built himself in the attic. (He had to take the window out as he couldn’t get the canoe around the bend in the staircase) We’d picnic and swim in the Lough jumping in from the jetty and having to push the dead mayflies out of the way. Even better was swimming in Washing bay where you had to wade out for ages in the mud going from ankle deep to knee deep, back to ankle deep before finally getting deep enough to swim in.
There was someone back then living in the house at the time and they had a tiny shop selling fruit salads, black jacks and sherbet to all the visiting kids.

Don’t know what’s scarier the governments inability to address the pollution problem in Lough Neagh and the river Bann or the ghost on Conney Island?

Great video Stephen. My friend and I visited the island several years ago and had a long chat with the the caretaker Peter who had lived there for many years. He told us some interesting stories. I had recorded our conversation and I'll send it on to you.

We once visited a foraging restaurant near where we live and written on the blackboard as we went in were the words - All funghi are edible,some only edible once ! We clearly didn't have the edible only once menu.

Thanks Stephen, Coney Island, immortalised by the words of Van Morrison. It’s still  depressing to me that Lough Neagh is so badly affected. Did you know that it takes me 10 minutes to walk to the pub but a half hour to get home! The difference is staggering… Ba Doom Tskk

One: there is this trick where you rest the paddle behind you on the deck of the kayak and the other end on the planks or the grass on shore, now put your hand on the paddle and hold the rim of the cockpit behind you and the other a bit out on the paddle toward the shore. Lift your red arse out. Park it on the paddle. Feel stable. Take your time to do your leg things as you crawl out in safety. Your weight will pin the kayak in place on the shore.

Three: that island looks a lot like my former retreat island called 'Hooft' in the former south sea. Had al lot of fun there. Also algae bloom there and as we dutch love our milk.
