The most realistic part of this series is adults treating children like they’re inherently evil and horrible and then acting blameless when those children end up doing evil and horrible things

These books makes a lot more sense if you believe that Dumbledore just wants Harry to die in a way that looks like an accident.

God, I wonder how a group of kids who get ostracized and judged merely for their house in the school they attend would end up prime victims for the evil wizard cult?

My personal theory as to why the school doesn't have a therapist is because McGonagall spent the school budget on Harry's freaking broom, and Hogwarts never financially recovered from that

It's really weird how the books clearly show a system of social and environmental factors (ie, "Let's stick all the kids with racist parents in the dungeons with only each other for company and tell them they're predisposed to evil for seven years") while also seeming unaware that those factors exist. Sure, chalk the house dynamics up to these children's "natures" and not the artificial conditions you're putting them in. Early sign of the author's lack of empathy, if you know where to look.

With all the muggleborn witches and wizards like Hermione that get invited to Hogwarts, it is hard to believe that there is absolutely zero cultural osmosis taking place, it is like they get brainwashed into forgetting their entire pre-Hogwarts lifestyle.
Even though they return home to the muggle world at the end of the school year. Guess everyone goes into some kind of stasis pod throughout the entire break

'Oh you've got talent and a thirst to prove yourself? TO THE DUNGEONS WITH YOU FUTURE DARK WIZARD!!!'

I think you also forgot one other dark fact there was literally a poltergeist that doesn't know when something is not a joke anymore and would happily put 11 year old kids in harm's way just for making him laugh and he's literally the symbol of all the chaotic bad behaviour in Hogwarts

The sorting hat should just shout out "Main character. Extras. Cheat code. Prison".

"There's no safer place than Hogwarts!"

Cue the montage of ALL the moments any single student was in danger, almost died, and literally died, set to that "Why You Always Lying?" song

The philosopher's stone would have been safer just sitting in a draw in Dumbledore's office lmao. The whole 3rd floor corridor thing is just advertising "we've got something important here!"

It all makes sense when you understand the entire thing was a test for Harry. Sending Hagrid of all people to collect Harry. Taking Harry with him to the bank on the day Hagrid takes the Philosopher’s Stone from the vault. Giving Harry the invisibility cloak. Leaving the Mirror of Erised -which should have been guarding the stone at this point - where Harry can find it. Simple traps a First Year can get through.
Dumbledore wanted Harry to confront Voldemort to see what would happen. Snape sums it up in the last book when he accuses Dumbledore of raising Harry like a pig for slaughter. Harry’s ENTIRE LIFE -including dumping him with the Dursleys and NEVER ONCE CHECKING ON HIM - was designed to raise a suicidal child soldier willing to die for Dumbledore’s greater good.
The true villain of the HP series is and always will be DUMBLEDORE.

Pausing at 9:22 to note that the thing which gets me the most is "and spend free time in your house common room". The clear implication is that cross-house friendships are... well, not banned per se but definitely discouraged. Or more precisely, not expected to happen in the first place.

37:00 it's pretty ridiculous and horrible especially because, as a campus security officer at a university campus, I have multiple lockouts every night. We're talking about adult students who are attending higher education, not a little eleven year old who is characterised as forgetful.
Someone should absolutely be helping him out. He should have a way to contact a teacher or someone to come let him in

25% of people are elite saviors whose bravery is the only thing standing against evil, 50% are side characters, and 25% are irredeemable evil villains from the time they are 11 years old.

-JK Rowling's worldview apparently

I literally just realized this but yall… there are no colleges…so in order to get a teaching degree they would have to go to muggle university… but most of the teachers know nothing and therefore could not have gone to university… THEY WOULD ONLY HAVE A HIGH SCHOOL EDUCATION, none of them would technically be qualified to teach AT ALL

Harry Potter is a world where dragons, wizards, and unicorns are real, but lawyers, social workers, and insurance companies aren't.

The sorting hat judging people on specific traits and assigning them in a way that will affect their whole life makes much more sense when you realise JK seems to be a biological essentially, believing that people's traits are innately determined by birth and are unchangeable.

It would be kind of funny if all those traps (the three headed dog, devil's snare, etc. etc.) were all actually just decoys. Like Quirrelmort spends a year trying to get past all the staff's challenges and finally gets to the Mirror of Erised and its all for nothing because the stone was just hidden in Dumbledore's pocket all along. But that would still be really messed up considering Dumbledore and staff are baiting a dangerous person in a location full of children. What if the thief decided to take the kids hostage and start killing them off to get the stone?

Also, I hate that Harry gets being sent back to the Dursleys. Like WTF?!?! Why does child abuse keep being treated as okay by the adults in these books?!?!

Honestly I think a lot of the reason people forget how bad parts of the books are is because the movies retconned a lot of the more egregious plot lines. Also the actors did a lot to make these characters feel more dynamic than they are. Alan Rickman and Maggie Smith made Snape and McGonegall so much cooler in the movies. Also the fact that JKR had such shitty world building made it easier for people to write fan fiction about Harry Potter, which also did a lot for the world.
