Oh to have people of Ustinov's calibre today. My goodness, when you consider how brilliant, talented and versatile he was, as well as a great raconteur, you have to mourn the fact that we live in a time where talentless and loudmouthed exhibitionists can achieve fame so easily. Talk about dumbing down.
I saw Ustinov onstage in conversation in the 90s, and he was erudite, witty, and completely enchanting. A memory I treasure.
He died the day after my wonderful Mum, who was a marvellous raconteur herself.
Always a pleasure to watch this episode of An Audience With.. Truly one of the greats.

I was born in 78...my whole childhood was FULL of distinguished and  talented men and women .... The kids of today have never experienced anything of the sort

An observer of characters that often didn't even need words for an audience to immediately recognise. His mimicry was unique because he did it with the minimal of movement, he just became them and you immediately saw them. An amazing talent born through a depth of understanding of national idiosyncrasies and behaviour that made one character sum up a nation for comic effect.

My husband and his father went to see Peter Ustinov 60 + years ago at The Palace Theatre Manchester. He was stunned by the brilliant wit. Everyone in 5he theatre was bent double with laughter…except for a bizarre couple sitting next to them who stayed silent and unmoved. He’s thought Ustinov to be the funniest man ever to tell stories.

Sorely missed. A legend.

I love so many of the films he was in

This is such a JOY!...Mr Ustinov is such good value and to see so many familiar faces in the audience of 40 years ago is an added bonus...thank you for finding and sharing this with us...

What a genuine, gentle, well read man.saw him in Durham, my home town. As Chancellor of Durham, around 1990.what a gentlemen  too talk to.Trueley  a international fellow, but a well spoken English man, R.I.P ,sir 😢😊

I envy everyone in that audience.
I would love to have seen him live and adore him so him. So very witty, wonderful, incredibly intelligent and immensely kind..❤😊

He had a brilliant mind pùre class

An all round genius. As a small boy I met him a few times as his yacht was moored next to my father's in Mallorca. I clearly remember his stories especially those about his complicated family history. a privilege that will always stay with me

The ultimate raconteur, I could listen to him for hours

I was lucky enough to work on one of his last films. We were staying in a very nice hotel in Ootacamund in southern India. I sat next to him at our evening meal most nights with Prunella Scales sat opposite me.  Great stories - and I even made him laugh on occasion. Great days.

Just look atthe audience! The PM, John Cleese, etc. all thrilled to be there.

One can never tire of watching, or listening to, the late great Sir Peter Ustinov.

Unbelievably talented man.

He was magnificent in 'Blackbeard's ghost'. It definitely holds up well for a film 58 years old and is my fav Disney film.

What a legend!❤🎉

What an absolute genius of timing and observation he was. A man of the world, a polymath and so so funny.

The great man was a great actor and the greatest story teller of all time. There will never be another like him a complete one off
