The most refreshing thing about rewatching this, all these years later, is the uniform humility displayed by the competitors from all sports. That’s why we didn’t just admire them - we loved them.
Now THAT is competition! I remember my mum worked as a barmaid at the hotel the Superstars were staying at near Peterborough. She phoned my dad to bring me down to meet them (I was about 11). I met and got autographs from boxer Dave 'Boy' Green, table tennis player Desmond Douglas and rugby internstional Roger Utley. I was so happy. Even now, as a 55 year old man, it still makes me smile.
Gen X algorithm pulls out some absolute gems and this is one of them. I wonder if we are the final generation that all watched the same thing at the same time and were shaped by it? Kevin Keegan’s bike crash & his magnificent resilience, Brian Jacks’ athleticism and Ron Pickering’s general joy at everything - lovely to watch. The 70s were rough but there’s a civility and a sense of sportsmanship here that I really treasure.
I remember watching this as a kid and thinking that Brian Jacks was just a Superstars pro. And not actually a Judo chap. This is how a tv program should be. Bang, bang, bang. Event after event. No dull interviews and excessive replays
Loved this show as a kid. Just shows you how humble and relatable these Olympians and elite sportsmen were to us. No massive void of celebrity, salary, mansion and supercar
Of all the TV shows that come back, WHY do they not do this? Was massive back in its day. This is a show could, quite easily, have a resurgence these days.
Worked with Keith Fielding for a term at Bramhall high, what a legend. Still a year before his retirement from teaching he was able to give most staff and students the run around in all sports. Great anacdotes as well.
56 here, and yes I remember this series, even though very young, it was sonething the entire family found wholesome viewing on our black and white tube television
I'm amazed how seriously they all took it, if this was remade today it would be full of crappy celebs making light of the whole thing, while getting paid thousands to appear. I imagine the line up being filled by Roman Kemp, Jill Scott, Bobby Brazier, Danny Dyer, Tony Bellew and Lee Mack.
I can remember watching this as a schoolboy on TV - very special to see it again 43 years later - it is noticeable as to the lack of arrogance and good spirit between them all
