By 1971, the Viggen was in service.

By 1976, three pilots had been blown clear of disintegrating aircraft and the entire fleet was grounded.

By 1981, it was photographing a Soviet Whiskey on the rocks six miles from Karlskrona with live RB 04s on the rail, trying very hard not to start a war.

Part Two follows the AJ 37 from production crisis, through the wing spar that nearly killed the programme, into the cold dark over the Baltic, where ninety-six missiles, four squadrons, and a handful of conscript mechanics were all that stood between Sweden and a Soviet landing.

The Viggen did not win because it was perfect. It won because Sweden refused to lose.
