I JUST sprayed this for the first time yesterday, I run a body shop and I was just tired of mixing the clearcoat for models, so I wanted to try this for the simplicity of application, thank you for the video you’ve pretty much answered any questions I had, great video!!

When I was learning to use water based paint  in the early 90s I had a hard time. It was confusing because I was using what I knew about solvent paint and applying it to water based paint. None of that applies and I had to learn all over again. If you are getting orange peel you need to add flow aid or the respective reducer. It should sheet into a wet film easily on its own with a 50% overlap. Make sure when you thin it you only add a drop at a time until its the consistency you need. You cant use what you know about solvent paint to reduce it because you can't overthin solvent paint, but if you just dump water or reducer in you can very easily over thin it and be left with colored water.  The simpler you keep it the better your results will be. You dont really need 2K water based paint because it cures in about 10 days. Even faster in a dehydrator. Strange thing was it made me better at using solvent paint, but honestly I don't use them at all anymore.

I would like to add a couple things on orange peel : Main Causes of Orange Peel
• Improper Spray Technique: Holding the spray gun too far from the surface, spraying at an angle, or moving the gun too fast prevents proper wet overlap.
• Incorrect Air Pressure or Equipment Setup: Compressed air pressure that is too high or too low, or using an incorrect fluid tip/nozzle, leads to poor atomization where paint droplets arrive too dry or clumped.
• Wrong Paint Viscosity: Paint or clear coat mixed too thickly—or under-diluted with reducer/thinner—prevents proper coalescence of the droplets.
• Fast-Evaporating Solvents: Using the wrong thinner or reducer that flashes (dries) too quickly causes the droplets to dry in mid-air or before the layer can self-level.
• Environmental Conditions: Spraying in temperatures or humidity levels that are too high or too low causes improper drying, making the paint solidify before it flattens.
• Improper Flash Time: Applying subsequent coats before the previous layer has properly set or allowed adequate flash time disrupts the solvent release and leveling.

what are your thoughts on doing the initial sand to cut the surface flat then leave it for a week or two to fully dry, same as you might do on a 1:1 custom job?
Kevin, have you tried a tape pull test on the paint over sanded plastic vs over primer?

Your explanation on orange peel and pebbling  I have not heard on any model vid before. On 1 to 1 yes.... haven't perfected my paint or cut and buff yet, but getting better... the by panel makes sense because of the real.... gonna do that on next one. One question do you spray top to rocker? I was taught that years ago, but watching vids on models  most goes bottom up. Done a few didn't like the result, started old school top down it got better.... never thought of difference in the cloths you used but got it thanks for the info and advice..... Later Weasel...

Looks awesome.    You do amazing work.  I have a question but almost afraid to ask.    I like a lot of the spray can colors available now.   But.  Never glossy enough for me.   I work at a giant automotive parts distributor.  I found 2K clear in a spray can. Does that stuff work?

I use to put future floor wax on my model cars when I was younger.......made them shine like  clear coat ...

Toothpaste cuts through all the chase. Use furniture polish to shine, don't
shake up the can, use the foam.
Tamiya laquer paints are the best I've used in my air brush and especially the spray cans. My method works well even on Testors enamels.
