She sells seashells by the 31 shell, 3 cell, 2 expanse sea shore

Props to deckard for actually sitting down and saying stuff like “122231223 shell” for our entertainment

Wonder what happens if you don't assume combining cells is commutative, resulting in 9 different rules instead of 6

@mathguy37 3 months ago

using "cell" and "shell" definitely made the naming a lot more scuffed

I've come up with a very simple optimization: 1+1 is always 2, so we don't need to write it at the beginning of each pattern name.

Guys talking about patterns with simple visuals is my favorite YouTube genre

@carykh 3 months ago

Oooh this is really cool, I love how the patterns almost look like rugs you might decorate your house with! (Minus the fact that most rugs are not triangles) I feel like the chaotic and recursive rules are gonna be the most interesting!

I wanna see someone like putting these together frame by frame that would be kinda trippy

A discrete model in automata theory.
0:42 cellular automata is plural, a single is cellular automaton.

Youtube knows what I want, this will be a cool series I just know it.
Also 1-D CAs are underrated.

232123 having 5 shells is kinda crazy
And 223331 has 6

21:41 who keeps removing the "L"s, and why? ( happens multiple times throughout the video)

I actually made a Processing program on Khan Academy that experimented with this in 2019, but it was deleted with my account last year due to inactivity.

The way you explain the setup, it really feels like a cellular automata with only 1 spacial dimension. The Y is acting more like a time dimension, since it is affected by, but cannot affect, the row above it.

crazy that we get this and a video with the same subject by webgoatguy in the same week!

I'm just a little bit sure your notation having a ridiculous variation on small change is a symptom of these cellular automata being Turing-complete. That is, with more possible states, these nice descriptions become not only hard but impossible to maintain. Those 26 errant patterns of the 729, or even the Sierpinski triangle already fof the two-state automata, demonstrate this beautifully.
