Having grown up with Nintendo games, I decided to look back on Nintendo before my time to see if the three shows they first developed in collaboration with DIC Entertainment were actually good. And well... you'll see.

The super mario super show is the most charming thing to ever air on tv

11:17 is messed up, but I just can't stop laughing at the way the king is like "No... you must have flowers before you harass MY daughter!" and then just pushes Link off the roof.

The Super Mario Bros Super Show is one the first 3 tv shows I remember watching the day my brain decided to start registering my memories better (aka when I was 4 years old). As such, this show is likely what defined my fandom for Nintendo, as corny and silly as the show was, so it did its job phenomenally well IMO. Don't care if Nintendo doesn't want to acknowledge this show themselves anymore; This is a staple in Nintendo's legacy to me.

Also, 4 year old me was oblivious to Link's stupid sexual assault actions when I was intimidated af by Ganon's appearances in the Legend of Zelda cartoon (Does not excuse how that had aged horribly though)

This was great, dude! I had seen a few episodes of these shows as a kid but it's been years, this was a really well crafted and thoughtful retrospective.

I do wanna say that the reason why the animation is choppy is because DiC's cartoons were being animated at TMS and Wang Film from the 80s and early 90s. They wouldn't get better with animation until Sonic The Hedgehog, but they wouldn't begin to fully improve until they started making their Strawberry Shortcake series.

Also, remember that television animation didn't find improvement until Ren and Stimpy came around to change the way of animation from the generic Hanna Barbera and anime-esque limited animation styles that were very popular during most of the 80s.

I think that's actually Simon Belmont's stunt double in Captain N

While I do love having the Super Mario super show dvd box sets. I’m sad that they didn’t include the live action segments that aired with the Zelda episodes. It would be a neat bonus feature . Who doesn’t like the idea of the Mario brothers working with inspector gadget?

These are some of the most nostalgic and charming shows ever in my opinion, With my Personal Favorites being the Mario Cartoons and Captain N, even if they may not be best with the writing, the stories are interesting and the animation is appealing

I really did wish that all of this was in a shared animated universe like the Marvel and DC cartoons from the 90s. Sure there wasn't no Super Smash Bros back then, but with Ruby Spheres going on to later do a better MegaMan and Street Fighter cartoon, Treehouse/Nevada doing a Donkey Kong Country TV show and with Pokemon on the horizon which would quickly change the multimedia landscape forever, I think it would be cool if Nintendo would nowadays try again with making more animated shows based on their many IPs outside of Mario and Pokemon. Especially with the success of the recent illumination Mario movie. This is the age of streaming after all and so many film franchises are already getting their own spin-offs on the small screen. Nintendo and other video game companies should do that while they also make movies. I'm not saying that it has to be shared Nintendo animated universe but just food for thought

Whatever your opinions are on the video game cartoons of the 80s and 90s, it's still cool to see your favorite games spinoff into other media! The Super Mario Bros. movie and Martin Adams' Sonic chapter books also show us how big these game franchises were back in the day! Despite Luigi having gotten a game voice by then, that's VERY different to the voices he had in DiC's Mario cartoons, when I got Paper Mario TTYD for my Gamecube back in the day, I still imagined Luigi saying his lines in his AOSMB3/NSMW voice!
