Bear with me , I will try to keep it short and simple. This applies to almost every country in the world were futbol is played.

Every country has a national federation (member association of FIFA) and also most have a separate profesional league, in the the USA there is US Soccer (federation) and the MLS (profesional league).

The profesional league manages the country's championship (Premier League) and to some degree the second and third tiers of the pyramid. This is the tournament that commonly is every team plays each other home and away, 3 points for a win and 1 for a tie, and at the end the team with most points is the champion. This in Spain is the Copa del Rey.

The Federation also normaly has another competition which is played as a knockout tournament (like March Madness in NCAA). Here teams of all the pyramid, profesional teams and amateur play. The profesional teams are normally seeded and enter in later stages. In England for example 747 clubs entered the FA Cup, with 124 teams taking part once the tournament reaches the First Round Proper. Like if college football had a braket tournament with Division I, Divisio II and Division III teams.

It is also common that at the begining of each season there is a game played between the champion of the league and the champion of the cup. It is known in many countries as the Super Cup or something like that.

Then we have in Europe the Champions League.

So this is why there were so many Clasicos (Real MAdrid vs Barcelona) in some seasons. They played a League game, the Copa del Rey matches, and the Champions League matches.

There may also be more tournaments depending on the country.

Mourinho played football since he was a child, he just never got to the pro level as a player

1:18 "the side" basically means "the team"

Mourinho just got appointed as Real Madrid's new coach this summer, he's back in La Liga

The greatest 2 way player is probably Ruud Gullit cause he’s famously known for his versatility in playing almost every position on the pitch at an extremely high level

18:40 Every country has a top league (La Liga in Spain's case) and also a cup competition (Copa del Rey in Spain's case), the cup-competitions are open to all teams in the country, even amateur teams can participate and it's single elimination, so if you loose even just one cup game you're out of the competition, this continues throughout the season until only 2 teams are left who play each other in a cup final. Then there are European competitions (Champions league, Europa league etc.) but clubs can't participate in more than one European competition per season.

So in the case of Barcelona and Real they play in La Liga (Spain's top league), Copa del Rey (Spain's Cup) and in the Champions League (top European competition).

In order to qualify for the champions league you have to finish high enough in your league, for example in the premier league the 1st-5th placed teams qualify for the champions league, they get 5 spots because it's such a great league, in my country (Switzerland) on the other hand only the champions of the Swiss league get a champions league spot because it's smaller and ranked lower than the premier league, so we only get 1 champions league spot. If we want to get more spots for our league, our teams have to perform well in those European competitions, that's how they determine which league gets how many spots, it's measured with a league ranking based on the performance in recent years.

When a club signs several big names or stars in football it is called Galacticos. It is basically signing the best players in the sport in each position to create a star-studded squad.

21:36 It's not the same as basketball, positions and roles are a lot more specific and as a result football is a sport that requires more specialists than generalists (two-way players tend to be generalists). Attackers (like wingers or strikers) for example are not expected to do much on defense, they just have to make sure that their positioning is good and they stay in formation. Even the attackers who play a lot of defense are still way worse at it than actual defenders, because attackers don't specialize in defending, that's not their role. The only players who have to specialize in both defense and attack are certain midfielders (depending on their exact position and role) and wingbacks, so these are the only positions where two-way players are of high value, for most other positions you'd prefer a specialist who is highly specialized for that specific role over a two-way player.

Midfielders and wingbacks are the only positions where you'll see people bring up the value of two-way players, it doesn't matter much for the other positions. That's why no one ever really talked about the defense of players like Neymar, Messi, Ronaldo etc. it's much, much more important for the team that they can do their specific jobs on offense.

To answer your question: Messi and Ronaldo both never really played defense outside of the bare minimum, it's more effective to have them preserve their energy for when they have to do their job on offense.

Real Madrid and Barcelona are clubs from Spain. Spain has its own domestic tournaments: La Liga, which is the national league and the Copa del Rey, which is the national cup.
National leagues use a "round-robin" system instead of knockouts to reward consistency. The best team over a 10-month period wins, to in theory meaning one bad day or a referee mistake won't ruin a whole season. However, knockout tournaments are held simultaneously. In the Copa del Rey, top-tier teams can play against lower-tier sides, narrowing the field until only two teams remain in the final to crown a champion. At the beginning of the next season, most countries host a single-game super cup which is a clash between the previous season's league winner and cup winner.
Because national leagues prioritize consistency, collecting the most points over the year wins you the tournament. Usually, the champion plus the other top three teams guarantee a spot in the ultimate continental tournament. In Europe, this is the UEFA(Europe federation) Champions League. The 5th or 6th ranked teams usually secure spots in the second-tier tournament the UEFA Europa League. Since 2021, UEFA also runs a third-tier competition called the UEFA Conference League, built for lower-placed teams and smaller national leagues. If you win the third tier confederecd you get spot in second tier Europe league if you win this you got a spot in Champions League automatically. In South America, the top continental tournament is the Copa Libertadores and the second-tier is the Copa Sudamericana. North America and central America have CONCACAF Champions Cup and so on...

A country's historical performance ranking influences how many spots it gets. In the Champions League, top-ranked leagues get more direct spots. For example, leagues like England's Premier League or Spain's La Liga get 4 automatic spots in the league phase. Meanwhile, mid-tier countries like Portugal get 2 direct spots from their league, Belgium gets 1 and lower-ranked nations get no direct spots at all. In fact, 44 out of the 55 UEFA member countries do not have a single direct spot for their league champion, their winners must play through multiple knockout qualifying rounds just to make it in.
The Champions League itself is a hybrid tournament. Under the new format, teams play against 8 different opponents in a single league phase. The top teams advance directly to the knockout rounds. In the knockouts, teams face each other in a two-match format (one game home, one away), where the aggregate score decides who advances, or penalties shoutouts, leading up to a single-match final.

Because top clubs advance far in domestic leagues, cups and continental tournaments, the calendar is brutal. Elite squads can end up playing 70+ matches per year.
After the continental champions are crowned, they qualify for global tournaments. FIFA frequently updates these formats. Currently, we have the annual Intercontinental Cup (which usually culminates in the Champions League winner playing the winner of a playoff between the other continents) and the massive, like world cup for nations held every 4 years, FIFA Club World Cup featuring 32 teams from Africa, Oceania, Asia, North America, South America, and Europe. So, a top club's yearly roadmap looks like this: pre-season friendlies, National Super Cup, Domestic League, Domestic Cup, Continental Tournament, and Intercontinental/Club World Cup.

There are exceptions everywhere. In the United States, Major League Soccer (MLS) uses a playoff knockout system after the regular season to decide the champion of the national league.
However, the majority of the world uses the point system for leagues and knockouts for cups. In Brazil, the national league (Brasileirão) was actually decided by knockout playoffs until 2002. It was changed to the European point system in 2003, which is still debated by fans today, but it brought  structural stability.

In order of importance, the Continental Cup is usually the ultimate goal. While the Club World Cup crowns the global champion, European teams hold a massive financial advantage, allowing them to buy the best talent from other continents. Because of this, European teams have dominated the global stage, the last time a non-European club won the world title was Corinthians (Brazil) back in 2012. Ironically, European fans often care less about the global club tournament than the continental cup, because they find winning the Champions League a much harder task.
Domestically, the national league is considered more prestigious than the domestic cup. Clubs often field reserve squads or youth players in early cup rounds against lower-tier teams to rest their stars. Continental tournaments also offer more excitement because some domestic leagues suffer from heavy dominance. For instance, Bayern Munich famously won 11 Bundesliga(German top tier league) titles in a row in Germany, PSG dominates France, and La Liga is historically a race between Barcelona and Real Madrid. Fans prefer seeing giants clash like Bayern vs. Real Madrid rather than dominant teams facing lower-table sides. The English Premier League tends to be more competitive, but even there, Manchester City has seen heavy dominance under Pep Guardiola. Brazil is also experiencing its own dominance continentally due to economic disparity, Brazilian clubs have won every single Copa Libertadores since 2019 (the last non-Brazilian winner was River Plate from Argentina in 2018).

Moving from club competition, AFCON is like the World Cup, but exclusively for African nations. In fact, every continent has its own regional tournament for national teams. In Europe, it’s the UEFA Euros, in South America, it’s Copa América (which frequently invites teams like the USA and Mexico to participate), in North/Central America and the Caribbean, it's the CONCACAF Gold Cup, in Asia, it's the AFC Asian Cup and in Oceania, it's the OFC Nations Cup. Real Madrid and Barcelona do not play in AFCON because they are clubs, not nations and they are located in Spain (Europe).

To understand how a player balances all of this, let’s look at Didier Drogba, the legendary Ivorian striker you reacted before. When Drogba played for Chelsea, he lived in London and represented his club in the English Premier League, the FA Cup, the EFL Cup and the UEFA Champions League. At the exact same time, he would regularly fly out to represent the Ivory Coast national team. He defended his country in AFCON, World Cup qualifiers, the FIFA World Cup itself and even the Olympics whenever they qualified(which is for under-23 plus 3 selected star players by the coach). Players spend most of the year with their clubs, but during official FIFA international breaks, club football pauses worldwide so athletes can play for their respective countries.

28:25 No, they weren't having parades after every win

The parade was at the end of the season

Guardiola won 60% of matches against him and draw 25% and lost 15% of matches. And out of those 15% Mourinho won half of them without refferes misstakes

36:04 Supercopa used to be a cup you could only qualify for if you won the Copa Del Rey or La Liga. In this case RM was the Copa del Rey winner and Barcelona was the La Liga winner

8:54 whattt??? Kappa is iconic bro

18:57 think of it like how the nba now has the cup along with the nba championship(they basically took that from football), but cup competitions in football involve every league level, the top and the subsequent leagues below (imagine if the nba cup allowed the g league teams to participate as well)

Mourinho is back this season

23:41 When the defender got a red card for that, it was because it was a denial of a clear goal scoring opportunity. No matter how light the foul looks, if it’s a denial of an extremely clear chance to score then it’s gonna be a red card.

La liga is the legaue, the champions league is something teams must qualify for based on their finishing league position from the previous season and the copa del rey is a simple knock out cup competition.

I think it was over heard, so just a short info regarding his legacy before joining Real Madrid. Mourinho was assistance coach at Barca, when Pep Guardiola still actually played at Barca. Then he went to his home country Portugal and after several stations became chef coach for FC Porto. With Porto he won the Champions League, which was surreal since - even given that it is well established European club -  Porto rarely make it even playing in Champions League stage at all. Then he joined Chelsea, where he won some titles and made Chelsea to a regular title and CL contender, but never won the CL with Chelsea. But they played intensive defense and counter football, very impressive. Then Inter Mailand, where he  won everything incl CL. And then he joined Real.

netflix just released a doc on mourinho this week, u have good docs there about players and coaches.

21:55 the best 2 way player or box to box midfielder could be argued Steven Gerrard. He could do everything on the field.
