We begin Where the Land Runs Out, our journey along the edge of South Africa, at Kosi Bay near the country’s northeastern coastal limit.
From there we begin working our way south through northern KwaZulu-Natal, searching for the first lighthouses along the route and quickly discovering that they are not always as easy to find as expected. Along the way the journey takes us through Hluhluwe-iMfolozi Park, Cape Vidal, Tugela and Umhlanga before carrying us past Durban and down the South Coast toward Port Shepstone.
The first leg ends with a turn inland to Lake Eland in the Oribi Gorge area, a reminder that even on a journey built around the coast, the road will not always stay beside the sea.
This opening chapter sets the tone for what lies ahead: long distances, changing coastlines, failed searches, unexpected detours and the many different ways South Africa meets the ocean.
