Continuing our journey around South Africa’s coast, we pick up the trail in Mossel Bay, stopping by the Dias Museum and the Cape St Blaize Lighthouse before following the coastline west.
From exploring the ancient Khoisan fish traps at Stilbaai and camping beside the ocean in Jongensfontein, to witnessing the floodwaters meeting the sea at the Breede River mouth in Witsand, this stretch is packed with quiet coastal beauty. We eventually make our way down to Cape Agulhas to stand at the official southernmost tip of the African continent, the dividing line where the Indian and Atlantic oceans meet.
The route continues through the historic whitewashed cottages of Kassiesbaai in Arniston, past the rugged shores of Danger Point in Gansbaai, and along the dramatic cliffs of Clarence Drive beneath Hangklip. But overlanding life is never without its challenges: between a mystery leak under the bed and a failed water heater, we have to make an unscheduled stop at the Bush Lapa factory in Paarl to get the rig road-ready before we tackle the West Coast.
Where the Land Runs Out is a continuous journey around South Africa’s coastline, with each episode carrying the story further along the edge of the country.
