I'd add the Mini R50 to this list.

My first car was a white 1987 205 XS on my mum's insurance

My Son has just turned 21. He has a 1990 Mazda mx5 (he has owned since he was 17) and he also has a 1994 Alfa Romeo 155 v6. Every time he leaves in the Alfa I have to open a window to listen to the lovely busso as he drives off. We are in NZ so insurance is not the same as the uk and its less about rust issues and more about parts access. Love your work team.

Great choices. Having done no research how about Citroen AX or Peugeot 106.

My first car was a Dutton Phaeton. Cost me £1100 and I sold it 9 years later for £600. Taught me a lot about car maintenance, how to drive, and was enormous fun.

Mk2 Golf Driver would make a great starter classic - GTi looks, but lower insurance. I had a Mk1 Punto many years ago - it was a great car, but I rarely see many for sale. And they can suffer from floorpan rot. My recommendation would be something a little left-field, but affordable, available and simply because they're a classic car no longer uncool - a Ledbury Maestro! Rare, but the odd one comes up for sale, and they're usually in good condition.

First classic. Slightly bigger than Golf, B3 Passat, quality feel, spacious, lots of variants to choose from. And yes i own one, as my first car and classic. Another great video lads, always pleasure listening it's like meeting with your mates.

I agree with Joe on the Mk2 golf would actually an interesting yet highly practical first choice and i also like quad lamp design on some models of the era

Morris Minor’s are to only classic that you can insure as a 17 yr old. My son has a Toyota iq a hidden gem.

205 diesel was definitely the one to go for, drove really well and lasts for ages will do magga miles.

When I had a 205XS back in the day, I was given a 205 Junior diesel as a courtesy car. It was the first diesel I'd driven and have to admit I enjoyed driving it. I haven't bought a diesel car since but I do have fond memories of that yellow Junior.

Wow, first one to comment! Feeling old now, but my first car was a 1977 230 auto, and my second car was a 1983 230CE one year later. Those two cars cemented my love of Mercedes and over the 28 years or so with a license, I have only been without a minimum of one Mercedes, for 3 weeks. Currently owning 5. The oldest a 1981, the newest a 1990. No modern touch screens or beeping here.

Further to the comment about Harry Metcalf spending about £80,000 restoring his Jaguar XJ-C V12... Earlier this year he sold it at auction for £140,000. The restoration seems to have been a bit of a bargain.

bloody hell i wish that any of this was true in america
granted i say that looking at an e38 740i for 2500$...

As a Saxo VTR owner. Does it count as a classic yet? Any problems mine has had can be fixed by unhooking the battery and reattach it and it's fixed.

@andyreeves426 11 hours ago

i think most of the cars suggested would appeal to 21 year old young men but i'm not sure 21 year old young ladies would be other than the mx5 and maybe the ka...
