on a scale from 1-10 how much do YOU love Doug Walker 🤔

Ranking EVERY nostalgia critic episode ever

“I don’t mind being the butt of the joke, just please make it funny”-Doug Walker

BTW, the guy who created "The Cartoon Guy Show" passed away in 2019, hence why he hasn't uploaded in a decade. Walker was a friend of his and a main character. The show was made to air on PBS, which Walker has contributed to before in the past.

The Nostalgia Critic had a rocky transition into 3D

speaking to Doug Walker's legacy - i kid you not, i used to walk by Doug's original artwork about once a week as a child and never realized this for years. growing up in the Chicago suburbs (i later learned this was also Doug's home turf), there was a restaurant my family would always stop in at called Photo's Hotdogs. good food if a bit greasy; typical American fare.

in the restaurant they had a little chicken/sports-themed gacha arcade machine, where you'd put in a quarter and it'd spit out a plastic egg with a prize inside. i played this thing almost every time i was there and won a bunch of various little plastic trinkets. the art on the outside of the machine comprised of a chicken running down a football field, ball in hand - pretty chintzy but still fun. imagine my surprise years later when i listened to an interview with Doug talking about his former career as a Chicago graphic artist, and as an example they included images of this EXACT machine and artwork. absolutely insane. having this knowledge, i do really see the resemblance between the art on the machine and the art from some of his early videos. Doug influenced my young consumerist mind on a weekly basis before i had any semblance of what a Nostalgia Critic was

When you realize it’s nostalgic to watch Nostalgia Critic now

I will always respect Doug for the fact that he's okay with people making fun of him.

Fun Fact: There are now (young) adults who were not alive when Doug released his first Nostalgic Critic video

Doug Walker
"A critic?"
Doug Walker with a hat and coat
"NOSTALGIA CRITIC?!?!"

I feel like one of the main reasons both Doug AND James got big back in the day wasn't just the content, but both of them are really good at making faces and the delivery of their lines. I feel like Doug has held up a little more than James when it comes to delivery but the faces he is able to make are comedy gold

One thing I've always appreciated about the later Nostalgia Critic reviews were how much production went into them, it was really inspiring as a young creative to see such a small team of people really go for it when it came to recreating movies out at the time.

Honestly the biggest tank to his career was not the copyright issues, but THE WALL REVIEW

Doug fucked up a lot, but he never hid the fact that he fucked up, people did jokes about him and he said "lol, that's funny!", People critizied him and he said "You know what? You're right, I fucked up, I'll try to not make the same mistake twice", He saw OneyPlays doing jokes about him and he said "We need to do something together" (which they did with that Slightly Artistic), He really come far by just being a good sport, taking criticism well and overall being a someone likeable (really, everyone that has met him say he's a really nice dude)

A weird fact about me:

I’m Mexican and obviously my native language is Spanish. I started learning english mostly through videogames, as they lacked translations back then.

Well, the real inflection point was when my sister and i started watching NC and the AVGN, subbed by a fan. But after a while we really wanted to watch the episodes as they came out, so it was the moment we really practiced our listening abilities.

Long Story Short, without the NC I wouldn’t have got my Cambridge certificate and wouldn’t have started teaching english as a living or my sister wouldn’t have got her previous work as a translator.

Thanks Doug.

Doug Walker is someone so influential and omnipresent on the internet that it's difficult to imagine YouTube without him.

I like that Doug can release a new nostalgia critic every week with solid production value while most other YouTubers take weeks to get out a video of equal or less effort, he's very efficient at what he does and I think that's very admirable

It's easy to make fun of stuff like Demo Reel and The Wall, but I still love watching his reviews. The Commercial Specials especially never get old.
Plus it helps that he's such a good sport, he knows that getting mad at people for not liking his content would be hypocritical of him to do, and I respect that.

"A Bat Credit Card? They give him the Bat Credit Card? They had the balls to give him one of the greatest superheroes of all time a Bat Credit Card?! No! NO! DOES NOT COMPUTE!"

Say what you want about Nostalgia Critic, but the Bat Credit Card reaction is peak.

The big problem I had with the "Angry Reviewer" era was that they didn't actually review things, they mostly just played a clip, summarized it, and made immature sarcastic comments about them. There's a reason James Rolfe is the only other creator from that era with staying power; his content comes from a place of love for and understanding of the stuff he's reviewing. Also in Doug's defense, and I hate having to defend him, most of the "Change the Channel" controversy actually reads like a guy who treats employees more like friends working on a school project.
