Star Fox 64 was one of my favorite Nintendo 64 games growing up.

Back in the day, one of the coolest things about this game was that there wasn’t just one way to beat it. Depending on how well you played, who you saved, or if you somehow figured out some weird hidden objective, the game would secretly send you down completely different routes.

And if you grew up with Star Fox 64 on the Nintendo 64, there’s a good chance you remember the hard path. The left side of the map. The route to the real Andross.

For a lot of us, this felt like the route for older kids, better players, or that one friend who somehow knew every hidden unlock before walkthroughs and YouTube existed.

This video goes back through the full hard route in Star Fox 64 to see if it was actually as difficult as we remember. From Corneria to Sector Y, Aquas, Zoness, Sector Z, Area 6, and finally Venom, we’re revisiting the hardest path in one of the best Nintendo 64 games ever made.

What other games from this era had hidden secrets or unlocks that felt as cool as Star Fox 64?

Did you know that on Sector Z you can fly into the back of the Great Fox for a quick pit stop that will heal you up? Has a cut scene and everything.

My favorite hidden thing was what happens if you get a high enough score. Usually at the end, General Pepper say "This is one steep bill, but its worth it," before signing your check. But if you get a high enough number of points, wiping out almost every enemy on every map in hard mode, and taking the optimum route for most points, you score and astronomical paycheck, and Pepper instead just says "WhaaAAAAT!?"

Funny story about this, the Blockbuster near me had Star Fox 64 as a "demo" game. Was able to play the entire game, not just parts of it. Me and one of my high school classmates who worked there regularly held "red route" competitions. We'd have small wagers on how many hits we'd get at the end.

A day came around where I just wanted the game outright. So I challenged the classmate to a match. Best of five. If he won, he would get my copy of Mario Kart 64. If I won, I'd get the copy of Star Fox 64. I beat him 3-1. Won the first, lost the second, two wins in a row.

Star Fox 64 was easily one of the best games on the Nintendo64.

I loved Expert Hard but I also began to change the route to exchange Sector Z with Macbeth for every run. Loved watching the train blow up.

Games back then really did not give you many blatant hints for secrets. In the Switch remake, Falco tells you directly to fly through the rings on the water in the first level. I was barely 7 when Star Fox 64 came out and some of the alternate paths were so mysterious I would sometimes trigger them without knowing how I did it. It gave some of the planets a truly rare feeling that is hard to get now when playing games as an adult

Fox's dad has a line ''never give up, trust your instincts'' that is very wholesome once you realize its where Peppy learned it and why hes been saying it to you the whole game, and when he says ''you're becoming more like your father'' he means it. Knowing this, you will never let Peppy die in game ever again. Slippy, sure its war, but I will reload the entire game if Peppy dies.

The Corneria secret is brilliant. Most first time players won't be able to save Falco as it involves some aggressive boosting and shooting. Then you have to be comfortable enough to maneuver the water arches. The game wants you to understand the mechanics pretty well before allowing you to go down the harder route.

Interesting little note about Kat’s appearance in Sector Z: she only shows up if you go via the hard route and meet her on Zoness. However if you do the secret warp between Sector X and Z she will not show up to help, making the mission a bit more difficult.

I think the factor that made that era "magical" was that as a kid back then we didn't have as much pressure towards increasing the value of every minute in our life through productivity and energy using tasks. We could just sit and not think about what comes next in life, not worried too much about deadlines

One thing I love about starfox are the weird interdimensional wormholes that allow you to go to unexpected places if you go through the blue gates. Very trippy 'bonus' levels
