That story on Serengeti need not be fiction. About twenty years ago my wife and I were spending a week camping in the Pilanesberg Game Reserve in South Africa. It is a terrific game park housing all of the big 5 and has prolific, varied bird life. At that time there were two magnificent, young bull elephants who were a bit dangerous and we were warned not to go too near them. One late afternoon toward sunset we were enjoying an evening drink, watching the various animals come and drink at the lake that is in the middle of the reserve. We also spent time bird watching in a nearby bird hide. There were a few other people nearby enjoying the plethora of wildlife around us. It had been a good summer with plenty of rain. Everyone was quiet and still so as not to startle the animals. The tranquility and stillness was palpable. Suddenly the tranquility was shattered by the arrival of a small expensive Mercedes micro bus that managed to drive into the black mud on the edge of the lake and get stuck. Out leapt two American couples and a teenage girl making a hell of a noise. We asked them to tone it down. I don’t like being addressed as “Hey Buddy” and be offered $100 to pull them out. I had my Toyota LandCruiser with me that is fitted with a powerful winch ( I’m a geologist). I only offered to pull their bus out to get rid of them. I pulled it out with my wife steering the bus because these people were so clueless.  All they did was yell and complain. Then just as we thought we had got rid of them the two bull elephants arrived to drink. They were 80 to 100 metres from us. Then both of the Americans picks up their massive video camera start walking toward the elephants. I called them back, but they ignored me. The elephants turned, trumpeting came towards us. The Americans turned and fled back towards us, one falling in the black mud with his camera. The elephants turned away.  They became unpleasant making comments about suing the park’s management because a camera was damaged and the elephants were not controlled with fences. One of the other people phoned the park’s main gate and shortly Game Rangers arrived and escorted them back to the gate.
