P.S. I had to think about it, but my biggest problems have always been myself. I would take them for granted, and put to much time between visits, or I would not regulate the moisture or something like that. About the only reoccurring thing that seems to happen is the amount of water that gets into the bin even though it is covered. I fixed the problem by raising the inside bin a few inches so there is a greater collection volume for water to drain into the bottom bin. Then I just have to go by and pour the liquid I've collected around my plants.
Problem solved.
Thank you so much for the effort you put into this and other videos.

The tips on dealing with the heat were very welcome as I have had more and more problems with this as summer heat waves have become more often, hotter and longer lasting. That's another reason your worms might try to escape. I'm kicking myself for not having thought of putting frozen scraps in my bin!😮
I am imagining that putting in the corn meal acts as grit?
Lastly, you did not mention this but coconut coir is a good alternative to peat moss for those looking for something more sustainable and if you don't have worm castings to start out your bin it is acceptable to put a few spoons of dirt to add some microbes to the bin. Ideally it would be some dirt dug up in the woods but if you're in the city stealing a little bit of dirt from a local park would work. Just make sure it's dirt away from landscaping flowers and such because these are probably given chemical fertilizers. Dirt from under some trees off the beaten track should be ok. Just be careful not to bring bugs to your bin.
Anyway, thank you very much for this video!❤❤❤
Because my totes fit soo snug, I added rocks to the bottom tote to allow airflow.
I've drilled a hole in one corner, and dug a "to-go" bowl underneath it to drain the liquid automatically. (Never found worms in the bowl.)
As for meat, dairy, egg shell, etcetera...They burn in the fire pit, until I have to dig the fire pit out. Then it goes to the worms.
Used fry oils go in the pit as well, to get rid of the oil, and help burn everything thoroughly.
Incredibly thorough, and exactly the reminders I needed before building a replacement “worm nursery” for our Ornate ornata.
When building with the intention of feeding other animals the worms, while also boosting a bioactive enclosure, we place a much smaller worm bin inside the enclosure with an easy to lift lid that’s hidden under a rock.
We still stack the two bins, but we put holes on the sides instead of the bottom, about a quarter inch from the bottom. And we place the bin on a bed of lava rock to add biomechanical filtration of the leachate (black gold).
All airholes above the soil line get covered with a fine mesh to reduce the risks of gnats, etc.
And the leachate bin sides and the worm bin nursery sides both have holes aligned with one another, so worms can leave if they want to, and return as well.
We occasionally find a large worm swimming across the pond part of the turtle’s paludarium. When we’ve recently harvested the worm castings, we occasionally find worms hanging out in the sponges of the filter, creating worm castings with the mulm. They tend to return to the nursery after about a week.
When we start seeing more worm activity than the turtle can eat, I know it’s time to harvest the castings again, and sometimes it’s time to give away some worms/start a new vermiculture bin.😅
