Back in the 60’s you used an apple crate dug into the ground to put leaves and coffee grounds to raise earthworms and night crawlers for fishing.

I use bottomless 6g buckets with gamma lids in my compost bins. This creates a worm bin within the compost heap and very rich compost at the bottom of the enclosed heap. The surrounding yardwaste in the heap is friendlier to the worms than compact clay soil and also insulates the bin from temperature extremes. I did start with in-ground bins, but bins in compost was much less work.

Zip Tie the wire mesh when you insert it into the ground. Put the hay inside a bag like the one's you get from 20 Pound Bag of Bismati Rice. I never had luck with this setup. All I do is wet my card board and layer the hole I dig like lasagna. Put rice rinse water into hole.

I live in zone 7a/b. I keep my red wigglers in many of my 15 to 20gal nursery pots that I compost kitchen scraps, coffee grounds and dry leaves in them. The pots are located in my backyard on the pavement. Winter freezes froze the compost solid for a few days 3 times this winter. The worst low temp was 5F day temp at the end of January. I thought my worms were all dead like I heard them say on the internet, but my worms are still alive and healthy. I have thousands of red wigglers. I have both fresh and finished compost. They are still alive and multiply so much so fast. So, I say red wigglers die below freezing temps is just a myth. BUT, if you love your worms, you should add some types of heating pads on top of the compost when temps. go down to 20F and lower to have a peace of mind that the worms have a warm pocket to hide in during winter blizzards.

I'll need a jackhammer to dig more than 2 inches into my yard. I may do this in one of my raised beds so i can save half a day trying to go deep enough. Or get my neighbor's post hole digger...

An option for winter: trap as many worms and have an indoor bin… easy to trap with a chunk of pumpkin 🎃

Considering the huge holes in the sides of that plastic bin, it seems to me worms would migrate deeper on their own during freezing weather. And for folks like me down here in Florida a bin in the ground sounds like a winner for the coolness it offers the worms in our stifling heat. I just always figured if they had a chance to leave they would. Thank you for the info about them never migrating more than 10 feet in their lifetime! I must give this a try, but I think I'll stick with my Home Depot totes.

In Texas it took me a few days to dig a few feet. I only worked a couple hours at a time. After digging a few inches I added water and let it sit a few minutes. Then dig again. Then it got tough. I added more water and waited a few minutes. It was so difficult. I really wanted to dig three feet for my purpose but got tired. I was trying to put a root barrier in for a plant. Just decided to take the plant out. Anyway, I will never dig more than a foot in my area again.

I think I'm gonna make an underground worm bin with this big ol nasty plastic storage container my mom gave me.

I've already drilled a buncha holes in it for use as a normal composting bin- just gotta make some worm doors now lmao

Cool, I think I'll try this with the 2 foot deep plastic tub I have left over from a top loading washer that donated its stainless steel drum as a fire pit. The tub is thick polyethylene. I'll try melting holes in the sides with a hot pipe to avoid generating loads of microplastic particles.

Hi Sonny. Just want to say that I've gotten so much great info from all your videos. Thanks for that. What are your thoughts about Asian Jumping Worms? I have hundreds if not thousands of them in my gardens. Will this in ground worm bin be encouraging them to multiply even faster than they already are?

Thank you for this informative video. I have 5 litre worm bins inside my raised beds and they work great but this is a wonderful option for the garde. Definitely going to try that. Luckily here in sunny South Africa our ground don't freeze

I agree with you! Three feet is a long way down. Most plants exist in the top 18 inches of soil, as this is the most nutritious depth. Few worms live below this point, and when you look for other comparisons please note that farmers only grow in the top 18inches too! The drip line from trees also creates a moisture level to soften the fallen leaves, and enable the micro organisms to thrive in the topsoil depth. I am with you 100% on this point. Why build hard to maintain compost heaps when you can create smaller versions in the ground. Very impressive, and clear presentation - thank youn
