Hi everyone! In today's deep dive, we're going down the rabbit hole of Mami Onami, a mother who has rejected not only traditional schooling, but structured homeschooling as well. Instead, she practices what she describes as unschooling/free schooling, where her children's education is largely led by their own interests. Rather than following a curriculum or structured lessons, the children come to their parents with questions about whatever they're interested in, and those moments become their opportunities for learning. But the deeper I looked into this family's approach to education, the more questions I had. We're talking about the potential educational gaps, socialization, the lack of structure, and what happens when a child's education is almost entirely dependent on what they happen to become curious about. And somehow, the schooling situation isn't even the end of this rabbit hole. We're also getting into the extremely unconventional lifestyle surrounding this family and the reality of promoting that lifestyle to an audience when most families could never realistically recreate the circumstances that make it possible.

I am a teacher and I am SO TIRED of parents thinking that school is childcare and treating it as such. It is where a child goes to learn, their behaviors are still your problem. Her bringing up school as childcare really set me off lol

the ironic thing is she thinks the education system limits her kids but she’s lowkey trapping them and controlling by not giving them any tools to make anything of themselves. your child needs some structure now so that later they can be freer, oh my god

this woman thinking an 8-2 primary school day is equal to a 40hr 9-5 is incredibly ironic considering she thinks she knows everything. in my country a six-year-olds school day would consist of like 3 hours of playing and free time and 3hrs of learning SHAPES, NUMBERS AND LETTERS.

This is insanity. My 3 year old has just started learning how to read because he has an interest in reading. Why does he have an interest in reading? Because we have structure and exposure, he goes to daycare 3 days a week and they read to him. Every evening before bed, I read to him. Now he’s trying to do it himself and is practicing phonics.

Structure and exposure to different experiences and interests are core fundamentals to a child’s development

I think to put it simply, she is neglecting and controlling her children. If they don’t learn the basics to be an independent adult, they have to rely on her their whole life, and it seems like that is what she wants. She doesn’t want her children to ever leave her, so she is making sure they don’t have the resources to leave her. It’s like being in an abusive relationship, but those poor kids know no different.

Also, any normal and caring parent would surely want a successful life from their children, but from the sounds of it, if in her mind AI is taking over the workforce, she believes that her children will never need to work and just do nothing with their lives? How to you expect your children to have ANY money or quality of life if you believe that they are never going to be able to work? This woman is honestly vile.

I was never medicated for my ADHD and I was incredibly successful in school

I hate how this women seems to think kids with ADHD just……cant do school and that it’s the schools fault like………..no

I didn’t get diagnosed with ADHD until I was 20, in large part because I did very well in school and never misbehaved. Then I started college, and my ADHD made itself very obvious. Not everyone with ADHD is exactly the same, this unschooling lady is just being super ableist.

The easiest time in your life to learn entirely new things is in adolescence. She is failing her children by not teaching them foundational educational skills that they can build upon when they are interested in something.

As someone with ADHD, it doesn't just affect your educational success. Shockingly, your brain affects your entire life. Wish people would stop demonising medicine. 🙄
