The “why” is something a parent can tell us but their why, doesn’t satisfy our why. My mom left when I was 3, my dad remarried an evil woman who he left me with. My dad checked out and I never saw him. They both gave me their why, but it doesn’t satisfy my why… 😢

You can hear him crying when he is singing and you have to remember when you’re traumatized as a child, you remember it as you believed it as a child which isn’t rational as an adult, but the belief is in the feelings are still in you just like you were nine years old when you’re 40. What you saw was a man putting in words, his trauma, his grief, his loss that he feels just like he felt as a child in foster care, I can’t tell you how many times I’ve had to deal with my own emotions created or rather maybe even beliefs as a child and you say it as an adult and you can hear that be in your belief or feeling, but it doesn’t take that belief or feeling away cause a child can’t think like an adult. This was a therapeutic song for him and for millions of other people who have the child like beliefs about themselves or the situations that traumatize them and facing it as an adult and growing through it.

Growing up in the "pill mill capital of the world, Pasco County, FL, this song hits different. I'm only 45, but I couldn't tell you how many friends/classmates I know who are no longer with us due to the opioid crisis. This song breaks me, Every, Single. Time.

It was very hard for Nathan to do this song. He became a Christian, married and kids. I remember when he came out with his 1st song. He was a strong kid. His music was his therapy.

Most of his music was inspired because of his mom, he always turned to music to relieve his pain... This song hits  home for me ...

I relate to this song so much. My mother wasnt on drugs or pills but she wasnt there mentally or emotionally. Self soothing as a child, finding things to help me escape mentally. My mother told me once a year she loved me and if she ever hugged me I knew she wanted something. As a child growing up I suffered so bad because she just didnt care. If I ever have kids I refuse to place the weight of generational trauma on my kids. Love the reaction❤

This track hits me hard. I didn’t have to deal with that other than a few aunts that was any and everything to be fucked up. But I had this homie and our senior year in high school he lived with me and my parents. My parents were strict and over caring. We as young teens hate that. I wanted to wild out. So my young ass was like why you wanna be here? You got free livin do what ever you want and night of the week. His mom was a crack n meth head. His dad killed his self when he was younger. But at the time we was 16 17 years old and at that time I couldn’t comprehend why you want to have rules put on you. I didn’t know then what I know now. He just wanted a parental figure in his life to care for him and for him to know and feel cared for. Wanting someone who wasn’t always smacked out n shit. A couple years later he got to LA and all I wanted was to live there as well. So he n his girl let me live on they futon for a few months till his girl said her or me so I had to go. I had a spot in Watts to live but it was the last time I ever seen him. A few months later a friend said Rob killed his self. I called to tell my parents and then they tell me they had a weird phone call but they could tell it was his voice and they kept saying we know it’s you talk to us over n over again then he hung up. Crazy after so many years he remembered my parents phone number.  So this track always reminds me of him and what he went through. He saved my life and I wasn’t there to save his

This song is pivotal in the NF journey...and you're 100% right.  As NF continues to mature and grow (and become a father), his perspective about his mom changes.

My dad left when i was 3 years old my mom had to literally beg him to show up the times be came to see us... my step dad was in prison the first 11 years of my life for Drúg§ he broke into peoples houses to steal and pawn things off for drűg§... my mom wasnt really present in my life she was always working or taking care of my aunts kids cause my aunts where on drűg§ and my mom always told me "their moms arent present they need someone" but she never really understood that me and my siblings needed her too and my grandma was never around she was always working... my oldest sister was more of my mom than my real mom was. My brother was acting as my dad going to daddy daughter dances with me when i was young and i had to help raise my little sister... i was 4 and taking care of a 2 year old because my mom took care of my cousins and didnt pay attention to me and my siblings and after my cousins grew up and moved away my mom gave up and me and my siblings are still raising our selves. So even though my mom was around she was present.

Y’all’s video took this song to another level. I am an adoptee and my bio mom and dad both weren’t there. My bio mom had a drug and alcohol problem. Growing up I blamed her and hated her. As I’ve grown up tho I’ve respected her and realized it was an act of love to let me and my brother go. I know the substances were affecting her brain. I’ve recently gotten contact with her and she’s clean and has full custody of 1/6 and part for 2/6

I grew up just like this. Youngest memory of my mom was visiting her in rehab from pills. Last memory was pulling the plug after she was found too late of an overdose. I went through these same emotions. His song dear mama is now how I feel. It's coming up on 6 years and I wish my 6 year old daughter would have gotten to meet her. Rip mom. You did your best. We all forgive you. It just took me a little longer than the rest.
