When you're a small child and afraid of the dark, your dad chases the monsters away. As an adult, it's his turn to be strong and keep his father from being afraid of "the dark."

1:30  THAT'S HIS REAL BIOLOGICAL DAD. DYING FROM KIDNEY FAILURE. AFTER THIS SONG WAS RELEASED THEY FOUND A LONG DISTANCE - LIKE 8TH COUSIN- AS HIS KIDNEY WAS A MATCH.
HE RECIEVED THE KIDNEY AND SURVIVED THE KIDNEY TRANSPLANT.  HIS DAD IS STILL LIVING. JAMES BLUNT TEARING UP SAYING GOODBYE TO HIS DADDY, SITTING RIGHT BESIDE HIM.
6:01 YES THAT'S HIS OLE MAN.
BEAUTIFUL HEARTBREAKING SONG.
JAMES BLUNT IS INCREDIBLE!!  💙 😢😢

You know how our dad chases the monsters away when we are little, keeps them safe…well now it’s his turn to do it for his father

"Just two grown men saying goodbye" are the words his father said to him when he went off on active duty in Kosovo. He was Household Cavalry, Reconnaissance troop and had a pretty important moment re the the US and Russian forces. This was a single take, extremely raw and emotional. His dad had stage four chronic kidney disease. The disease is incurable without a transplant, and Blunt wrote the song when he realised that his father could soon die. This song actually found a distant relative who got in contact, transplant successful and his dad survived. His dad, who ended his military career as Colonel of the Army Air Corps, was all rather embarrassed about it all. He was there for the recording, and as it finished, there was not a dry eye in the room. "Whats all the fuss? I'm not dead yet" is his reported response.

Love this so emotional. It takes a man to cry♥️♥️🫂🫂

It's the honesty and vulnerability of James that really gets you in this song!

I believe his dad was in final stages of kidney disease and was in desperate need of a transplant when he wrote this. Thankfully he got a new kidney donated. Happy ending.

Even grown men cry when they hear this song.  It brings back the emotional memories of ones father. It takes a man to show his feelings as your did Jay!  Great reaction!
