- We don't think this was a PADI discovery dive. We tried signing up at one the day before, but they didn't have any openings and recommended the place we eventually went with.
- Around the 20:06 mark, you can hear the guide say "this is the sign for touching," which is the same sign he later gave us when I touched the coral. Since this incident, we've learned that was a huge mistake. We've been in the ocean plenty of times since and haven't touched anything. It was our honeymoon, we wanted to do the excursion, and we trusted the guides.
- As of now, this was our first and last time scuba diving. We've been snorkeling plenty of times since and definitely feel more comfortable in the ocean, but unfortunately this is still in the back of our heads. We've briefly talked about getting scuba certified, but it may be a long journey to build up the courage.
Here's where things get a little interesting...
- The woman from the company who "helped" us during the hospital visit and dropped us off at our Airbnb gave us weird vibes. For starters, she kept asking the nurses if they could discharge me and was almost trying to hurry me out, saying I was likely good to go after the IVs. We both told the nurse to keep us there as long as they wanted.
- When she was dropping us off, she said this was "a great thing for the company to go through" and that she was proud of how everyone, including the staff, responded, blah blah blah. It felt out of place and was definitely not what we wanted to hear.
- This same woman also put us in "contact" with a diver she knew, and he emailed us this:
"I wanted to reach out to you regarding a couple of concerns you had about your scuba diving on company name/location*. I have been teaching scuba diving for a very long time and thought I might help with an explanation of a couple of things. Understandably you were somewhat shook up. I read the email you sent *name with some concerns and thought I would put your mind at ease. The first was the possibility you had run out of air. The tank you used still had 70 atm of air. It’s standard safety protocol when diving to return with a safety margin of at least 50 atm left in the tank. You still had more than that. The second concern you had was a build up of Carbon Dioxide in the tank. Scuba air is just normal air with a mix of 78% nitrogen 21% oxygen and 1% of other gases including some carbon dioxide. The air you breathe out, which would have a higher percentage of carbon dioxide does not go back into the tank. The amount of air you used up was entirely normal so it was unlikely you were holding your breath for long periods between breaths. This is called skip breathing and can cause you a headache after diving. I would not like to speculate on what medical condition caused your incident. I’m very glad you recovered quickly."
It seemed like they were just trying to cover up whatever happened, but we were just thankful nothing worse happened, and we were shaken up from the whole thing.
